Default Question for HDTV experts: 50hz vs 60hz vs 120hz

I live in the US and currently have a Samsung 661F HDTV. It only supports 60hz material and does the 3:2 pull down conversion for 24p material.

I have a rather large collection of PAL DVD's and some BD's that were encoded at 50hz. They are not compatible unless I run them through some type of player that will output at 60hz (I use an Oppo dvd player). My question is, do 120hz HDTV sets also support 50hz material in the conversion? I would like to play PS2 PAL games and also PAL DVD's without having to let the signal be converted in the player.

I have a feeling that the 120hz television sets still only support original source material at 60hz. All HDTV's in Europe and the UK support 50/60hz and I want to know if any LCD's do as well in the US. There was a stickied topic here but it is no longer updated.

Only a high-end ceiling mounted Front Projector or a Pioneer Kuro monitor will support PAL/SECAM and NTSC with the ability to display 24 fps at multiplies of the original frame rate.
The only flat panels that support PAL/SECAM and NTSC with true 24fps refresh rates are the following Pioneer displays and only these US models.

2008 models

Pioneer Elite Kuro PRO-101FD 50” Plasma (72HZ)

Pioneer Elite Kuro PRO-141FD 60” Plasma (72HZ)

2006 model

Pioneer PRO-FHD1 1080P 50” Plasma (72HZ)

Most but not all of the Front projectors on this list handle PAL/SECAM also.

Hmm... so no LCD's that support it? Shame. At least there are a couple plasmas but damn are those expensive. Sssshhh. I don't have the kind of money to spend nearly five grand on a television.

There are no dedicated US LCD flat screens that support both native PAL and true 1080P/24 refresh rates. If you notice it is only dedicated monitors only that support PAL/SECAM without tuners. All Front Projectors have no tuners or speakers alone with the new 2008 Pioneer monitors also have no tuners or speakers. One also needs an external cable box or satellite receiver, and a surround system with the mentioned displays. Having a DVD player convert PAL to NTSC is the cheapest way to go but of course native PAL would look better then NTSC.

Here is a listing of multi-system LCD displays that appear to be imported. As far as I am aware none of the 1080P models have 5:5 pulldown with 120HZ for 1080P/24. The closes display that comes close is a Sony KLV-46W300A that is 1080P with a 24p input. But Sony does not mention the refresh rate which could be 60HZ for 24p.

This imported Sony mentions motionflow which in theory should be 120HZ for 24p. Also it does mention it will do a reverse 3:2 pulldown for film based material. Perhaps this TV might be true 24P with 120HZ refresh but more data is needed.

The above website in error mentions that one can view BLU-RAY movies at 24 frames per second just like the movie theater. No display every made does 24HZ refresh since there would be a unwatchable flicker on the screen. Displays need to refresh at 48HZ, 72HZ, etc in order to be watchable. Film in the theater is encoded at 24fps and 100% of the time flashed on the screen at 48HZ, 72HZ, or other multiplies of 24.
