Sound Quality (SQ)
Extras (xtras)
Picture Quality (PQ)

ex: (xtras) > (SQ) > (PQ)

Naturally, this relates to Blu- ray discs only.

SQ>PQ>extras

Extras aren't very important to me. Having been a musician for over 10 years, I have a keen sense of hearing and Audio quality, depth, and immersion is really important to me.

SQ>PQ>Extras

PQ was number one for me until I upgraded my home theater system for better sound. And now I enjoy sound quality more than PQ

+1

SQ>PQ>extras.

I wasn't a musician, I just pretended to be one and wrote about them (I have a degree in Music Theory). So I share your love of music, and quality of recorded music.

Of course, since we're watching a movie, PQ is important.

extras - I couldn't care less. Never watched any of them.

It depends of what kind of movie it is. For instance Dark Night it would have to be PQ-SQ then extras but if its a concert or something then SQ would have to come first followed by PQ then extras.

PQ first, I have a large TV and it really shows crappy PQ. SQ very close second, I just upgraded to a better than average sound system and it is amazing what good SQ does for it. I love extras but they are in 3rd place.

PQ-SQ-Extras
PQ is very important but almost as important is the soundscape to immerse you into the movie. I used to be a musician and did some live and studio sound work so my sens of sound is very anal. Even though I can't afford the "best" equipment for HT, I'm very picky and happy with what I have.
Extras are not very important to me. Granted, they should be there for the ocaisional viewing but it isn't that important to me.

SQ-PQ-Extras.

A Blu with great SQ and an ok to above average PQ will still be a great experience. But great PQ and crappy SQ, would be like watching a silent movie on Blu. It wouldn't make sense. As for extras, I only care on the extras if the movie speaks to me, example would be The Dark Knight, Iron Man..etc. Don't care about extras on movies like Reign of fire, The Prestiege or Fools Gold.

Default Beauty is in the Eyes and Ears of the Beholder

My gut reaction is to say,

SQ, PQ, Extras

But then the question came to mind, why is this question relevant? If someone didn't value PQ, he wouldn't want BR. I said SQ first because all too often we think of movies (short for moving pictures) and don't give proper credit or value to the soundtrack. Ever watch a horror flick with the sound off? Somehow there is a complete lack of scare in it. No chill running up your spine, no nothing.

I invested more in my Audio Equipment than I did in the TV itself because I believe it represents more than half of the movie experience (or at the very least, half of it). I read everything I could on acoustics and speaker placement. I spent hours fishing wires through my walls to install the speakers just where I wanted them. I played with all the audio settings on my AVR to get the speaker firing right, etc. I didn't spend hours tweaking the picture settings on my TV.

I also bought a 7.1 channel receiver 5 years ago when there was virtually no source material that would take advantage of it. I believed it was a coming standard and that day has finally come. It may never be offered on all movies, but when a director wants to have a monster creeping up behind me, those back channels will come in mighty handy!

Yes, PQ is very important. SQ should probably be considered equally important, so I am revising my initial response.

Yes Sir. You are correct.

Your answer is thoughtful and logical.

Perhaps, as you have stated, there is no relevance, but to me there is.

Why all this fuss about BR in the first place if PQ is not the most
important quality that one looks for (i.e. sees).

The mere fact that you chose Sony and the model you did
says multitudes about you.

For that I give you an A+ on your thesis.

The Denon must really kick butt . . . . . . though . . .

I would have to rank them as SQ>PQ>Extras. Extras are not usually that important to me, but PQ is almost as important as SQ. However, best SQ for me is from my 2 channel output which is being updated with a separate DAC for Digital; vinyl is my other 2 channel source primarily used.

I would say PQ, then SQ, but I want the best of both worlds. They really compliment each other and make the whole Blu-Ray experience.

Vinyl ! ! oh my God. I thought I was the last relic left on Earth
who remembers vinyl.

Why is it that today's digital sound engineers strive only to duplicate the "warm"
lush sound that could only be had with vinyl ?

PQ is #1

SQ should be on par with the PQ, BUT as a purist I prefer that if the movie was originally mono or stereo we have the option of using the original mix. Alternate mixes (5.1/7.1) are welcome, but I like having the option.

Extras are typically only watched once (if at all) so I find them not that important.

PQ >= SQ >> Extras

For those that haven't ever used the >> symbol it means much greater than (at least in the books I have seen it in).
