Default BD = Random BSOD

Hi, I'm using PDVD 7.3 w/ latest patch and when playing BD I get random BSOD. All other media formats are ok. Some BD movies work but far from all. After BSOD my POST is very slow, it halts approx 30 sec before loading my HDD's. (Some movies work but when I close the player it is not responding and I have to terminate w/ taskmanager.)

Detailed description:
Can watch 1/2 BD movie (from BD disk or BD image on HDD) and then screen corruption starts, w/ sound. Screen flickers black w/ greenish stripes, then my projector searches for source, then black w/ stripes again, loops like that for 5-6 times then BSOD.
If I'm really quick when the first screen corruption appears and press ctrl+x (close PDVD) then everything is ok (no BSOD) but I have a exclamation mark w/ a yellow triangle in the sys tray, w/ no tool tip or options when clicked?! If I managed to avoid the BSOD I can't even see 1 minute of the BD before the problem returns. If I restart the PC the problem starts at the exact position it did the first time.

My system:

ASUS P5Q Pro
4GB ram
Q9550
PowerColor HD3870
Vista 32bit
LG GGC-H20L
Auzentech Auzen X-Plosion 7.1 Cinema
No O/C
Optoma HD70 (HDCP compliant)

Software:

AnyDVD HD
PowerDVD 7.3 OEM patched

Sounds like a compatibility issue between the latest PowerDVD 7.3 4617 and your video card driver. I would revert back to 4407. I have tested 7.3 4407 and CAT 8.11 (driver ver. 8.552) on Vista 32bit and that combo worked. But, with 4617, I got BSOD too with my HD 4670.

Default Thanx

Thanks, I'll revert to 4407 and hope for the best.
I have PDVD8 Ultra to but I have even more problems w/ that one (sound related + above) so I use the PDVD7 OEM.

If that still doesn't work, try CAT 8.10 (driver ver. 8.541).

I don't like mine burned.
You may want to add a second case fan to prevent things like that from happening.

Hi, reverting to 4407 and/or using 8.10 didnt help. I checked the eventlog and as soon I start a BD w/ PDVD I get error regarding "atikmdag" like every 2 second, when the screen corruption starts there is a recovery of the display driver in the log a few times then BSOD if I dont shut down PDVD right away.
The same software, OS and drivers worked flawless on my old DELL 9150 system (same gfx and BD-player to). Can my problems be a faulty m/b? I do have some strange things happening during post regarding USB devices.
Hope someone know what to do.

Best regards L.

Does WinDVD make a software you could use?

I've been away from HTPC for years, so I don't know. However,.. I did use a HTPC from 1999 to 2003 or so. WinDVD was always much more stable and generally better than PowerDVD.

Players like Zoomplayer with decoders from WinDVD were even better but ... I don't know about things today... Maybe PowerDVD is the only choice because I see lots of people seem to use it.

From my google search, the problem seems to be an encoding error in how the CATALYST control Panel Software Interacts with ICQ's in relation to the OS instructions.

I would uninstall CATALYST control panel and Graphics Driver and then install a standalone Graphics Driver only and see how it goes.

Good luck!

I just posted some help in another forum about this very issue or related. Drivers once again. ATI would be out of business if enough people complained to the Better Business Bureau about driver issues. I would dump the card and go with and Nvidia. You have a pretty good system. Don't waste it with that card. Peace....
