if you want to buy that you don't need a separate receiver. however, if you are deadset on that model i would advise doing some searching, as i'm willing to bet sonystyle doesn't offer the lowest price. i would also talk to some people that regularly post in the home theater section of the forum, as they are great resources for helping to put together a home theater for any budget

You're only going to get lossy audio with this. Also... what the heck do they mean by "repeater" on HDMI? Is that passthrough only? I'd find out before moving forward.

Personally, I would think you'd want to get something to get lossless audio if you were going to purchase a new receiver.

It does accept LPCM, so he could still get lossless as long as his BDP decodes on board.

A repeater, in the case of HDMI, just means that the reciever will take multiple HDMI inputs and output them along a single route. Essentially, it will accept in incoming signal and "repeat" it out to another device, like a monitor.

The only thing I would suggest before buying it is to find a store with one on display that you can listen to. It's not a bad setup per say, but it's all a matter of convenience vs quality.

He's got a PS3 which will decode DTS HD-MA, so he's good to go on the lossless front.

I've tested this at the store with a S350. This unit lacks power to go louder. It maxes at 40 when I found the sound gets comfortably loud at 34. If you have a small space, sure. But remember to place the sub well.

Personally, I could find a better receiver and speaker system for US$600 that will give me lossless audio and a solid and sweet sound.

Thanks for the clarifications. I guess I missed the part where he mentioned he had a PS3, but I wasn't sure about the HDMI audio.

Anyway, point still stands- if you're going to put that much into a system, why not get something that'll actually decode HD audio so that you're more future-proofed?

thx alot for the info guys I'm not sure what to get yet, I live in a apartment so I don't need something that powerful yet.... I just wanted to know if you always need a AV receiver when you have a home theater ''bundle'' like the one I listed for example...

****If I buy a AV receiver that has TrueHD audio for example and I buy a Home Theater System that doesn't have TrueHD option will it be able to have TrueHD with the receiver ???

The receiver needs it. The speakers do not.

I'll say it: Waste of money.

Buy a good AV receiver that accepts HDMI audio and decodes the HD audio codecs (you may want it down the road) like the Onkyo 605/606/705, etc. Then purchase an inexpensive but good 5.1 speaker setup (just about any of the Polks), and you will have a system that is 5X better than the Sony you are looking at, at the same (or very close) cost.

Look up member Driver_King. He has good recommendations for equipment in his sig.

i bought a sony system like this and becuase it didnt have an optical input for my ps3 i replaced the dvd player part and replaced it with an hdmi sony a/v receiver so i now only use the speakers from the home cinema kit and use my ps3 and sony a/v receiver for lossless audio
