Default Adjusting Brightness Vs Backlight adjusting

Here is a quick question..

Not concerning the life of the TV or the power consumption.. just pure image quality.. what is better... turning the backlight up and turning the brightness down to get a brighter picture or turning the backlight down and the brightness up?

Turning the backlight up is effecting the brightness physically while turning the brightness setting up is effecting the picture virtually. I could be mistaken about this.. so please let me know if I am.
