Default Pannie 85u/800

In everyones opinion is the 800 worth the extra money? I currently have a samsung 42" 720p lcd (wife bought for me for Christmas last year) and know I need to upgrade to 1080 regardless. This tv is actually quite good, I spent a lot of time calibrating it fine tuning etc, with the blu hd essentials disk. I personally do not notice a differance in lcd/plasma but, I have only looked them over in the store. I have heard good things about both TV's (85u/800u) and dont know if playing movies in 24p is worth the $400 or so.

Well most people believe the 24p mode on the 800 is useless since it has a documented flicker issue, that makes it almost unwatchable in that mode.. so if that is the only reason you are looking at the 800u, I would stick with the 85u.

Personally I went with the 800u as I wanted the 58" model which is not made in 85u, and I wanted the higher contrast rates, THX mode (easy for better calibration without paying more money).. and am hoping the patch the flicker issue on the 24p mode..

Although the flicker is documented, most OWNERS who use the 48Hz don't consider it to be unwatchable, but rather something you don't even notice during most viewing.

You can search for "flicker" in any of the -800 or -850 owners threads and see this.

What have you discovered on your model, or is the arrival still pending?

I use 24p on my 800u. The only time I notice flicker is when the movie is paused.

lol not really, got my stand today and put it together, but everyone has me scared to actually use my TV within first 150 hours.. so this weekend will only be seeing a break in screen.. I plan to use my PS3 music shuffle to break it in.. got a buddy who did the same on another panasonic plasma.. so it should work.. but late next week watch out for me on PS3 games testing the thing out..

$400 is not worth 24p especially since everyone is having problems with it. With $400 you can buy alot of blus

So a "few" people suddenly turns into "everyone" for you
400$ are worth if you want visible improvements to image quality and THX really makes a difference on movie nights.

Can you show examples of where "everyone" is having problems with it?
Have you read through the various owners threads?

Substitute "everyone" with "a small minority" and you're probably on the right track.

There are other reasons to go with the -800 as well.

Single pane of glass
Inputs
THX colour-certification

I guess your opinion doesn't count here.

ok I would like to substitute the word "everyone" for "small portion"
but I still do not see a $400 difference.

Not everyone will, that's why there are five levels of quality to choose from.

Not everyone measures the differences equally either. Some people may not see a $4,000 difference between the -85U and the PDP-141FD, but it still sells for those that DO see it.
