Default Best Receiver for $1000 shipped?

My budget is $1000. Need the best my money will buy. Also, is there a ranking of sorts as far as quality of receivers?

Something like:

Kenwood--->Onkyo--->Pioneer--->Marantz

*not sure if this is accurate, just for illustration purposes

Not really a ranking, but I would actually put all of those in reverse order if I were ranking them

How about Cambridge Audio? Audiophile sound which is much better than any of those mentioned.

I would say as a receiver it is comparable to the Onkyo 606, Pioneer 1018, or a Sony 920. When acting as a preprocessor with an amp, it could match or better most under a grand receivers....

totally agree Jason....For the 350 or so bucks you can get one for on ebay I'm thinking why not pick it up.....i looked at the pioneer 1018 at best buy this evening for 599+tax and outside of a few less watts with the yammy I can't see spending the extra 200 bones for that pioneer....never had a yammy, but i'm actually considering this combined with an amp as you mentioned instead of spending 800-1000 on a pioneer elite, which was my initial plan.

The 1018 has preouts as well, but for what it is doing you will probably find them very comparable. I would go for the cheaper myself....

How many HDMI ports? What speakers will you drive? Any additional features you are looking for?

BTW first choice would be Denon or Yamaha.

Great company but the price is going to be about $200 to $500 out of his budget. I expect the 640v2 to be about $1400.00 to $1599.00 Street price.

The Yamaha RX-V / Emotiva combo is a great, inexpensive way to get into a separates system.

If you want an all-in-one A/V receiver for now, I'd recommend checking out the Yamaha RX-V1900. You can probably find it online for around $1000, maybe just under. It's a network enabled receiver, offers 140 watts X 7, includes 1080p upscaling, and more HDMI ports. It also includes 8.1 channel pre-outs like the RX-V663, so you can also use it as a pre-amp / surround processor when you decide to add a separate amp down the road.
