For the most part, I love my PS3 - it rarely gives me problems. One annoyance, however, is that it always automatically starts playing stupid songs from whatever games I've downloaded on to it as soon as it starts up. With the volume at the necessary level for Blu-rays, the video game icon music is deafening. So I figured I could turn the PS3 on, pop a disc in, get all situated on the couch, etc. - and by the time I turned the TV on, the disc would have loaded already.
Well I did that today, and then got distracted by a phone call, so I didn't end up turning the TV on for a good 10 minutes after the disc had been loaded. I finally turned the TV on to... a black screen! Seconds after turning the TV on, I saw the little pulsing icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen, and then the movie started to load. It certainly appears that the PS3 waited for the HDMI connection to be made before it loaded the Blu-ray. I don't remember this ever being like that before. Is this a new "feature" of the 2.53 firmware? Or is it a result of some Blu-ray discs utilizing the image constraint token? I'm going to test an extremely old Blu-ray disc right now to see if it does it with that one as well, but I tested it multiple times with my latest BD purchase, La Femme Nikita, and the PS3 just refuses to load the Blu-ray if the TV is off. |

My PS3 does it as well, though it affects games, also. I think it is a firmware thing. I don't remember it doing so originally (though I normally turn my TV on first.) It does it with both of my TVs: a Samsung flat slim crt 30", and a Samsung LN40a650. Of course, it could have more to do with the type of HDMI cable, too. Aren't there newer versions of HDMI cable, is that possibly one of the differences? I've had my HDMI cable since December 20th, 2006 (when I bought my PS3.) I also notice that my new TV won't display that it has the HDMI port in use unless my PS3 is on (though it will thankfully remain on HDMI even when the PS3 is off until I change it.)
