This is a bit off topic, but I was wondering if this would work:
I have free cable coming in to my apartment and if I buy a new plasma will it get HD signals? I don't have a cable box. Will the TV receive 480i SD signals or will it also get signals in HD? And, what about OTA HD signals? |

you will get the basic hd channels. I have the smaller hdtv in the bedroom hooked up directly without a cable box and it picks up cbs, fox, nbc, kcal, abc, tlc and maybe 1 or 2 more. As long as your HDTV has a built in tuner.

it won't pick up HD channels. You need to sign up for HD cable or Sat. and get the HD recievers.

i am not sure. I was under the impression that without signing up for HD cable or sat your are unable to pick up any HD signals because you need the proper HD cords. I don't think an HD signal can come through your cable and show up as HD. you may be able to pick up an HD channel but it will show up in sd. can anyone clarify this for me as well please?

Leopold, incorrect.
My TV gets HD channels with corresponding picture (and sound) via simply the coaxial cable - I mean, I don't have cable at all, just an exterior antenna, but HD signals from the basic channels come through crisp and clear - football was a whole new experience when I discovered this! As long as your TV has the tuner, you are good to go. |

If your tv has the built in digital tuner you get the free basic local digital channel in hd. I just have a$20 antenna (for hd) hooked up to my coaxil and get the basic channels in hd. if you want the other cable channels in HD such as discovery and espn then you need to pay for the service and have an hd box.
But everywhere you should be able to get fox abc, ect, ect w/o a cable box. If your local channels don't have digital stations yet then they are screwed as the middle of feb is just around the corner. |
