Talking The role of fanboys/Hillarious Retrospective

Who all remembers the biggest waste of technology from the last decade? That's right, Circuit City's own DIVX.

I actually get a good laugh out of reading some of the anti-DIVX sites that are still kept posted for historical purposes. One of them is here:
http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Screen/6139/

It's a sarcastic website where the webmaster blasts Divx by pretending to be a fanboy. Wicked funny I tell ya.

I also checked out the more serious material at: http://www.fightdivx.com/divx3.htm

Worth a read I think.

It all gets me thinking about the role of the obsessive fanboy in pop culture. Striclty speaking, most ppl don't care for them or pay them much heed, and I know I don't plan on being one. Maybe a little biased, but definitely not fanboyish. But I do wonder of they are a neccessary thing. Case in point, just about everything good in pop-culture has a few fanboys, but I never knew a Divx fanboy. Seems proof like none-other of how much it sucked.

This was worthy of some laughs, especially when you start paralleling some of that to some of the stuff we're seeing from HD-DVD zealots and the like today.

So true and, ironically, the last time I became so passionate about CE issues was the DIVX/DVD war. Followed the demise of DIVX with great relish - they were so easy to detest.

Very much so. On that same note: Circuit City and some other retailers never recovered their credibilty in my (and many others') eyes for pimping that crap.

Sounds like I'm that camp. I've not gone into there except for maybe 3 times over the last 7 years. My shopping these days is at Best Buy, Newbury Comics, Gamestop, and of course, the net.

Glad y'all found it funny. I like the line about "history has shown us that when there is only one provider, they will sell the product at a fair price--as demonstrated by the cable company, the electric company, and Microsoft."
