Exclamation Blu-ray problem, help!

My parents bought a Lionel Richie blu-ray dvd in hmv hongkong. When we tested it back home, it only had the commericials at the beginning. The main menu was not there. Is that even possible? What do i do with it?

Did a little research...
when did you buy it? - the only Lionel Richie Blu-ray is "Lionel Richie - Live in Paris" blu-ray released 5 days ago on 11/24/08 according to dvdsource.co.uk & zavvi.co.uk. BUT its not officially listed even on his website or amazon.com or amazon.co.uk. plus only the DVD versions of "Live in Paris" and "The Collection" are listed on Universal Music's website. Plus I've noticed that the bar code for the blu-ray is the exact same number as the DVD version. So I think everyone is right, you got a pirated version of the dvd. Did you try it in a regular DVD player?

Make sure it is a Blu-ray first. Pop it into a dvd only player and if it plays on that it is not a BD of course. It is also possible it is region coded and your particular Blu-ray machine is the wrong region.

keep us posted, cause officially no record exsists with the artist or studio, but that doesn't mean that their sites are up to date.

I could only find the DVD on eBay.

They bought it in HMV, Hong Kong. It's a place where they really sell original stuff. They bought it last November 28. It didn't say live in paris though. It's "Lionel Richie Live - His Greatest Hits and More". I really don't think it's pirated because inside, it contained the little booklet and the blu-ray ad. Is it possible to have defective original blu-ray dvds? Aren't they supposed to be well processed first before they get released? Hmff.

How do you really know?

Piracy, intellectual property theft and patent infringement is very widespread in several Asian nations. That sort of thing is working on the most massive scale in China. If I was vacationing in China I wouldn't trust anything I bought there as being legit unless it was a state-produced product sold directly by the Chinese government.

The problem is bad enough that Microsoft recently shut down all software distribution in South Korea. More than 90% of all computers in that country are running on pirated versions of Windows. Nearly all copies of MS Office are counterfeit.

Ultimately, people get what they pay for in buying pirated movies: crap. The video quality is never as good as the legit retail product sold here in the United States. Same goes for the sound quality. But then that kind of exposes something about the people who often watch pirated versions of movies: they don't care about audio-video quality.

I am VERY picky about presentation quality of movies. If I am going to spend 2 hours of my life watching a movie, the presentation quality in the movie theater or via the Blu-ray disc had better be really good. Pirated movies and movies downloaded via torrents are a complete waste of time. When someone wants to brag about seeing a movie before it has even been released in theaters I just kind of laugh at that person for having watched the show in such low grade quality.

It's Blu-ray, not blu-ray dvd. Sorry but I hate it when people say it wrong.

Its not legit, there are no other Lionel Richie Blu-rays out there. According to Universal Music and they said there are no LR blu-rays released. Chinese pirated DVD's and Blu's are a huge business for the bad guys. It doesn't cost much for those inserts and ads, which in the Pirates eyes, makes the product look more legit. Plus on November 21st, Sony was the first and only company to release blu-ray titles in China, with only 30 titles at about 205 yuan ($30), and those were imported, not made there, which Sony wont be doing until next year.

Sony article

HMV is a huge international chain. They would only sell legit stuff

You probably need to upgrade your firmware

Did they reaLLY buy it there, or did they buy it from a bootleg booth outside? Those are quite common

I believe I've read about a release of LR somewhere

The Summer Olympics are big too... but when in China in 2008, look at the international drama there... Just a little too suspisious in my eyes, specially when Sony Pictures is the first and only company to offer Blu-ray's in China, which only started Nov. 21st.
