Default Denon question

I have a 2803. In the setup you can choose to increase or decrease the volume of your speakers to balance out everything. Is there anything wrong with increasing them all to get more volume? It seems like I used to be able to watch stuff with the volume at -15 or less but it seems lately that I'm at -10 or -11.

No, I'm not losing my hearing. If I turn it up too loud the wife is all over me to chill out.

Just wondering is this is bad for the receiver or the speakers?

Thanks in advance!

the reciever is fine, for the speakers it depends on the speakers... but it sounds like you need a Sound-Level Meter..

No I have the balance fine. My question was confusing. I'm wondering if it's bad to bring them all up evenly to add volume or should I even care that I have to turn it up that loud.

Shouldn't hurt anything. Just set it at what you think sounds good and adjust the volume. For me I have my fronts at -3 (out of -6 to +6) and the center at +3 so I can hear the dialog more than the surrounding noise.

I would really recommend that you calibrate your receiver to your speakers. The difference in sound quality can be amazing, depending on your starting point. I can't recommend that anyone rely on their own hearing in order to calibrate a system.

Did your Denon receiver come with an auto calibration function that includes a microphone? If so, I'd read your manual and use that as your starting point. If you really want to calibrate your receiver well, you should read the stickied thread on calibrating your receiver with an SPL meter. It's located on the receiver main page, and here's a link to it:

Good luck.

I think the question is not about calibration.

It's about boosting all spaker level to get more sound.

And I think you should not boost all of them. Just pump ip main volume for more sound.

If not enough, change receiver for more power. But quality sound is more important than power for home theater, my opinion.

That is exactly about calibration. Calibration on a receiver is adjusting speaker levels independently, so they can produce equal sound relative to the listening spot. Just jacking up the speaker levels isn't going to cut it.

The balance seems fine. I don't have a pair that is too low that I need to bring up. DJ Matt is correct. Although I have them all set, I'm wondering if bringing them all up the same amount to boost volume is a bad thing. The balanced levels stay, I just throw more to them.

Are you saying if the current db volume for each speaker is -5, can you bring them all up to -2?

or if they have different settings can you bring them all up, but keep the db at the the same ratio?

Current
------------
RF -12.5
C -10
LF -11.5
RS -5
LS -4

making new
------------
RF -7.5
C -5
LF -6.5
RS 0
LS +1

By doing this you just turned up each speaker 5db

Instead up increasing the db levels, you can simply turn the master volume up. Increasing all the speakers' individual volume at the same time may not do any damage to your speakers. However, it may throw your calibration out of whack. If it is something you really want to do, then do it with the help of an SPL meter so that your speaker levels are still the same.

Okay I see everyone's point. I don't see a master volume on this receiver but I see how just cranking everything up can possible distort the rears or sides or center or whatever. I'll get a meter to make sure they all come up nice and even.

Sorry for the brain hemmorhage, Grills
