Default My friend went to Disney World

and I was really surprised how big it is. He says it's 27 miles wide, has it's own police and fire departments, has a elementary school, middle school, high school, its own college, and a freeway.

my parents are getting back today and i think are planning on going again in 3 years or so. just around the time my kids and neice would be old enough to really enjoy it. convenient?? i hope so!!!

i'm gonna have to play the whole: "the kids can't travel out of state w/o their parents" and hope to get a trip out of it. we'll see.

I'd rather buy Blu Rays.

Though.... Disney is a great supporter of the format.

I've been to Disney when I was a kid and have zero interest in going back.

the Walt Disney World property is about 47 Square Miles.

It does have its own police and fire departments.

There is a "Walt Disney World University" but it is for training employees.

No one LIVES there... he may be thinking of the town of Celebration, Florida, which is a planned community NEAR WDW that was designed by Imagineers.

WDW is larger than the city of San Fransisco and larger than the island of Manhattan (to put it in perspective).

Yes, there are highways running on property but they aren't interstates. Some of the area where I-4 runs was once Disney property but the agreements that they made with the state on routing the highway close to their planned roads had them give the land back to the state.

Celebration was once part of Disney property but Disney sold their interests off during development and it is considered it's own town now. It does have a university in it (Stetson I think).

You want to read something interesting, a book called "Married to the Mouse" tells the whole story of how Disney duped the state and Orange and Osceola counties into paying for all the infrastructure while Disney made its own zoning laws and doesn't have to answer to state licensing boards for most of its buildings and infrastructure (plumbing, sewage, waste, electricity).

Legally, Disney has the authority to operate its own airport (it had one at one time) and its own nuclear power plant if it ever chose to build one.

It's freaking huge! I was just there in June 2008. Was at Disney's Hollywood Studios (Orlando) during the star wars weekends. Now before you guys go total geek....it was for work and it was a coincidence.

We stayed in a condo and it was great, short drive to the park. We bought the book did the who plan and saw all of Disney within 5 days. It can be done (without kids) if you follow the Disney book.

However here's some pics I took from the parade.

What areas did you have the most fun? For sure my wife and I will goto Epcot and the Animal Kingdom.

We have Disneyland here in LA so we don't need to see that twice.

Everyone that hasn't gone should definitely find time to go. I've been there twice, but the 2nd time was a while ago, so I've been wanting to go back. Aside from the rides and kid-themed attractions, there's definitely a lot of interesting stuff to go see for older people, who have an interest in the history of Disney and their movies.

When they originally built Disney Land in CA, a bunch of porn shops and whatever else started to open up nearby, and Disney wasn't thrilled about that. Learning from this mistake, he decided to build Disney World in FL, but bought up lots of surrounding land, so that nobody could build anything bad near his eutopia.

You can look it up on Google maps, and see the different parks (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, etc). as well as all the trees surrounding the parks, separating them from the rest of civilization.

This should work: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...4&z=17&iwloc=E

Here's the order of fun (for adults)

Epcot - Race track, Soarin, Spaceship earth, around the world...
Hollywood Studios - Twilight Zone - the coolest ride in that park
Universal Studios - Not Disney, but it was totally cool. The Mummy ride rocks.
Universal Studios Islands of Adventure - a theme park, with Spiderman, Hulk and comic book land, dueling dragons..
Magic Kingdom - great place, just been there about 4 times as a kid
Animal Kingdom - my biggest complaint is it's tough to see in this park.

Disney is fun, but Universal Studios is way better place for adults.. Especially, Island of Adventures.

It's quite impressive, been a few times and going again next year. Definitely worth doing at least once to go to all the various parks in the area including Islands of Adventure (the universal park).

They have some very cool setups / architecture there. I fear I heard they were tearing down dueling dragons

A few pics attached...Islands of Adv. was great. If you travel down there make sure you spend a day at each Universal Studios...if you skip them you'll be short changing yourself.

If you are talking about Disney World in Orlando, it is basically its own municipality now. It's called Reedy Creek.

I hate working there because their electrical inspectors aren't the greatest, they try to make up code and I spend alot of time quoting code to them, and they still don't get the fact that they are to enforce the code, not make up code as they go along.

Disney does have to follow all state building codes. Stetson University is in Lake Helen, no where near Reedy Creek. Disney didn't dupe Orange and Osceola county, what he did was smart business. He created several companies to buy the land so nobody knew he was buying the land. The reason for that was to keep the prices down.

Trust me having been born and raised here my family saw the whole thing go down. Personally I think Disney isn't doing for the local economy as good as it should. They pay low wages and that in turn keeps wages down across the board. When the Navy base was here Orange county was booming because regardless of economic times single sailors have money to spend. We can thank Mayor Glenda Hood for loosing the base.
