Default Best Buy charges $180 for PS3 HDD back up?

Good evening fellow Blu-ray.com peeps. It is my hope that your night has been more eventful and pleasing as mine.

Best Buy has had my PS3 in for repairs beyond the 60 day repair period. I was actually quite excited to get a new 80Gb PS3 to replace it, but unfortunately this is not the case. As it turns out if I want the data from my former machine I will have to pay a whopping $180. For an extra $100 I could by a new Wii. Ouch.

I have decided to wait and see how long it will take to get my 60 Gb machine fixed, so that I can retrieve my data. Is all that I actually need are some photos from a vacation a couple years ago.

The question I pose is, has anybody else confronted this before? Is it actually true? etc. etc. etc. Any info is greatly appreciated.

I'm out for the evening, a friends B-Day awaits, but I hope to hear from you guys when I return.

Many many thanks.

Couldn't you get the defectuous hard drive back and try to retrieve the data yourself using your computer?

Unless that's not technically possible, I've never tried it before.

Is the problem with the hard drive or the machine? If it's a machine issue, don't let BB rape you. Complain enough and take the machine home and back up the HDD via SD card (if it still works). If it's a HDD issue, you have a decision to make...are the pictures worth $180? Because thats probably the only surefire way to salvage the data.

By the way...you said BB had it for 60 days? WTF? Are the freaking Geek Squad playing your PS3 all day? I would be pissed. And don't buy a Wii. It's fun for the first month, but I haven't turned mine on for about a 1/4 year.

I think it's technically possible to back it up to my Mac, but I need the console back (with HDD) to do so. Sadly, Best Buy techs have it at the mo'. How to go about doing it, I'm not sure.

Yes, the 60Gb machine is pretty incredible. It's unfortunate that I fell into that 1% failure rate category. As it turns out so far, I will be waiting for the console back and backing it up myself to CD/DVD. I'd rather not loose this machine, as having 4 USB's has been pretty outstanding.

At least the District Manager is willing to make a call Monday morning to see if a rush can be put on the repairs. This was the ONLY thing he was willing to do

Oh, btw, I'm a huge walking billboard for NOT getting the Best Buy Product Service Plan. It cost me $130 and so far 2 months of my time away from games and Blu-rays. If I didn't get it I could have paid Sony $150, had it repaired by official Sony techs and have the console back in a few weeks less time. Go figure. Plus I spent $300 bones on a new Blu-ray player (Sony's BDP-S350) to fill the gap of not being able to watch movies.

If all fails, Best Buy owes me a brand new machine anyways. I will lose my old data cause I am not willing to shell out $180 for something a techie can do on his spare time and without stress, but at least I have that going for me.

Thank you guys for your responses. I'll let you know how it all works out. I have crazy shitty Best By stories if you're up for them.

Cheers

I have no intentions of buying a Wii. Haha.

60 days. Yeah, sucks. First the Power Supply blows... then miraculously the Logic Board gets fried. How, I'm not sure. So I bring it home, get to use it for a couple days, and about 1/2 an hour of COD4, then boom, shuts down again. I did however notice a 638Mb game save file on the HDD for Unreal Tournament, which I have never played. Hilarious. I don't think it's an HDD problem.

Oh, I did get get the chance to call them shit heads, AND say they were raping me. What I think is going on is they are sick of dealing with me. I spoke to five different employees today. All of which had completely different stories. I'm beyond mad. I think I laugh out loud now when I think about it.

What might work out is I get my console back, I back up my photos, and game saves while I'm at it, it turns out to be a lemon, I go back, complain again, get a new console and fingers crossed the new 160Gb SKU is out be then. Sweet.

Just another reason why I don't buy extended warranties on electronics. I would rather go through the manufacturer, or pay a local repair shop.

Hmm, I have no idea what warranty you are talking about. I purchased the extended warranty for my PS3 via Bestbuy when I bought it March of 2007. I had to get that one replaced two months ago (60 gig ) so I bring it back to Best Buy and I am given the MGS4 bundle which cost $499.00 so guess what, I also receive a Best Buy gift card for $120 for the difference that I paid for the original 60 gig. That my friend is worth the $100 warranty I paid for originally and I still have a year and half more on the warranty. I simply cleaned out my HDD before trading it in and reinstalled everything on the 80 gig when I got home.

don't let them steal your money if you can help it. bestbuy is one of the worser stores morally. their geek squad offers a service to 'setup your gaming console' for 40-50 dollars. by setup they mean turn it on, create a user profile for your system, probably setup and date and time, and set parental controls. wtf is that. wanted to smack the dude that offered that.

Can you not just but a USB splitter port for the PS3 I was going to do this today to give me 5 ports in total for my 80GIG unit.

The HDD is a snap to take out and replace ...For $180 you could but a bigger HDD> Keep the old drive in storage and you technically have the pictures until you decide whether to back them up or not . If you arent sure what is broken make them give you the unit back and swap out the HDD yourself...I dont see anywhere what is "wrong" with the unit, are you sure it is even the HD.

I would double check the warranty...If they replace with new, your warranty is usually voided (99.9%0 of the time) and at that time you have the option to purchase a new warranty at that time with the new unit. Its always in the ultra fine print if even on the warranty...If they told you otherwise, then get a manager to verify it and sign somethign for backup.

Just an FTI to protect yourself.

Thanks Paul,

The warranty I purchased is for 3 years. The first two years I can exchange it an unlimited amount of times, the third year its only one time. After the first time during the 3rd year, I have to purchase a new warranty. I still have a year and half before that third year arrives.

I just had my 60 GB crap out on me, and I'm about 9 days within my 2 year warranty at best Buy. Problem is, BB doesn't repair (or so I was told), and would make me replace it.

Are the only two models out there right now the crappy ones with 2 USB ports, no backwards compatibility, and no flash card ports?

Sad but true, my friend. I work at Best Buy and get MANY an upset customer that has to relinquish PS2/SACD support. It sucks but Sony didn't exactly tell us they'd be omitting features when we drew up those original plans either.

Actuality Sony will most likely add PS2 emulation by next year since they are planning to sell PS2 games online.

Best Buy wanted $160 to reformat my friends drive to Fat32 or NTFS after the 2.40 corrupted it. No back up, just forcing the PS3 to reformat it when we put it back in... Took us about $25 for a shoe and 5 minutes to do it on our own.

Then when my Girlfriends laptop vista got corrupted, they wanted $130+ to reinstall vista with no backup. I told them to eat it, and got my school to install Vista Office, Office 2007, and all the drivers free in about a day. Made me very angry because we bought the warrenty for $200+ that does not cover reinstalling Vista (after vista corrupted the HDD, including the partition that holds the reinstall data that they started to use instead of sending out disks )

Best Buy lost a lot of my computer and gaming business after those kinds of SNAFUs.

OTOH, when my laptop broke, Dell backed it up, replaced the harddrive, checked it for other damage, replaced the casing, the keyboard, and the fan, and I had it back in about 30 hours...

Then when my XP crashed, they reinstalled it, and saved as much data as they could without asking, and put it in a folder for me to check. No charge.

And I hate Dell, because I had to use my warrenty twice and lost my computer for 4 total days.
