So I want to buy Onkyo 606 and I have a couple of questions (I play Blu-ray on my PS3 and I'm totally green when it comes to HD sound and receivers).
1a. If I pass the signal through the receiver and into the LCD (Sharp 52XL1E - 1080p compatible ) will there be any loss in picture quality (will it still be 1080p) ? 1b. Can I hook up my XBOX 360 the same way ? 2. Perhaps this questions was asked already (it probably was) but do I need to have special columns or cables to play the audio from the receiver ? Or will my five years old columns and cables suffice ? 3. I read in some thread that Onkyo 606 heats up very fast. Does this mean that I cannot use it for to long ? well as a new owner i would say this yes 1080p well pass untouch through the receiver via hdmi through your tv. yes the xbox well show at 1080p with hdmi. and in order to get the lossless audio you will need an hdmi. Well hopefully the audio experts reply to your post since im just a newbie also.

welcome to the site kitsune,
Pretty much what melo said. The onkyos do have a reputation for heating up but typically if you give it enough room to breathe will be fine. your speakers are fine, just use an hdmi cable from ps3 to receiver and receiver to tv and not an optical for audio. |

The thing you need to be aware of with analog sources (component, s-video etc such as the non-hdmi 360's) can only be upscaled to 1080i via HDMI, I believe. Anyway, you end up doing double-scaling to a 1080p source. In addition, if you have multiple sources (consoles, BD player, etc) going to the receiver and then out via a single HDMI, you end up with only being able to tweak one source, rather than 2, 3, etc. This probably isn't a big deal for all-digital/HDMI sources, but the mix with analog can be an issue.
The fix for this is simple enough- I run my 360 and Wii video outputs directly to the set, and my PS3 to the receiver and then up to the set. This allows them all to only be upconverted once to the tv's native 1080p, and allows me to have separate tweaks for each input (sharpening up on Wii and brightness up on the 360, for instance). It's not a big deal but you just need to be aware of it. |

I had a new 606 for about a week before I returned it. It had the well known humming issue. And yes, at least the 606 gets hot quickly. I’ve seen them much, much hotter just on low or no volume than other brands turned up higher than my personal comfort listening level – which is loud.
I returned mine for the humming & a price match issue with CC. Other than that I liked the 606 though. They may have sorted the humming/HDMI issue by now, but I doubt they can deal with the heat which may or may not affect the longevity of the product. It’s been 4 or 5 months since I was dealing with this, so things may be sorted out in Onkyo land by now. Their higher up stuff is very good but maybe the 606 at its price point had/has cut too many quality corners. I hope not though. Shemp |

I've had my 605 for about 6 months or so now. The receivers can get hot in an enclosed space. I have a nice open stand and it's completely a non-issue. While I have read about the humming issue, overall it must not affect many folks because there are a lot of Onkyo owners and I've read about it now... twice, counting yours?
Any product is going to have some individual issues or tweaks, unfortunately. I've heard of some menu issues on the 663 (that are easily worked around) and other receivers. Basically if you look hard enough you'll find problems in any product. I heartily recommend the Onkyo line, but in the end it's your decision. |

I was in the exact same situation as you 6 months or so ago and trust me the 606 is a great buy. It'll do pretty everything could ask it too. Awesome system, definitely recommend buying it. Just make sure to give it a fair amount of breathing room as indicated in the manual.

So from what I've gathered I understand that:
1a. There won't be any loss in quality picture if I put the video signal through the receiver (it will still be 1080p). 1b. I can hook up my XBOX 360 (HDMI version) the same way. 2. My columns and cables will suffice. 3. It will not overheat if I give it enough room to "breathe". Thanks all. If I misunderstood anything, please let me know. |
