Default Audio Neophyte Help: New System Wanted

Hi Everyone. This is my 3rd post so please go easy on my request for help. I also know next to nothing about audio and explains why I bought a Bose system back in 2000.

I own a Lifestyle II system and I want to upgrade. I spent about $2K on the system back in 2000 and I am not looking to spend over that. Is there a system available or is it better to buy components separately and mix and match? Of course Bose has systems but I don't want to make the same mistake if there is better value out there.

I guess what I am looking for is what would be the best quality/price under $2K? The cheaper price the better but I know you sometimes sacrifice the quality.

I appreciate any help!

Thanks, now what? That is good info but I am looking for advice on solutions.

Proposed solutions:

Has anyone tried the Aperion Intimus 4T Hybrid SD?

A coworker has suggested to me that I buy a Yamaha Receiver, NHT Speakers and a Velodyne sub. Any opinions?

Next comes listening. That's certainly not a bad recommendation in equipment, but you'll need to decide that for yourself. I would recommend getting out and listening to as many speakers as you can to figure out what you like and what you don't. We can all recommend speakers till we're blue in the face but it doesn't matter if you don't like the sound.

sorry to make it harder on you
but....
the sound is a combo of both Amp/Receiver and Speakers
you need to find what you like as a pair

Default Dealer Locator

Here is a dealer locator from a top speaker company. If you find a dealer in your area that carries this line of speakers you should find other brands at the same store close to you. Just a stab in the dark. But a start. Then you can listen for yourself. Best of luck !

OK, thanks for the link and advice. The local shops are dropping like flies these days but there should still be enough available to listen in person.

It shows my naivete when I write that it seems like this should be easier. You would think a great sounding combination or system would sound great to everyone.

Thanks for the help!

Yes, it is sad that some of the great local shops are falling. However, my shop says they are getting slammed ? However, you might be able to get a good deal on some of their gear. You will find out that the audio/video sub-culture is one of a kind when it comes to what quality "really" is !

Aperion and NHT speakers and Velodyne Subs are excellent. So are Yamaha receivers. Also look at the speakers from Axiom and go to Amazon.com. They sell many receivers and speakers from Polk, Klipsch, Definitive Technology, and Martin Logan. They are all good speakers. Many of these mail order companies have money back guarantees.

As an Aperion owner you will not be disappointed with them at all.. The biggest attraction to the aperion company is their customer service. Hands down it is the best customer service I have ever experienced with any product.
