Default blu-ray settings YPbPr vs RGB

my trainer and i were talking about the differences between the two and he said that rgb is what the movie is suppose to look like but i think it looks funny just wanted to know what you guys set your players at and/or your thoughts on the 2

YPbPr is the colour space used for video that is transmitted via analogue cable (i.e., component).

if you are transmitting video through digital means (i.e., HDMI) the colour space is either YCbCr or RGB.

YCbCr is intended for film such as those on Blu-ray discs. RGB is intended for computer generated imagery like videogames on the PlayStation 3.

lastly, YPbPr is just the analogue equivalent of YCbCr.

So then why do movies seem to have better, wider range of color with RGB on my tv? YCbCr seems to be too washed out... Using a PS3 by the way...

the YCbCr colour space range is 16 - 235 per channel
the RGB colour space range is 0 - 255 per channel

with a properly calibrated display there shouldn't be any difference between YCbCr and RGB

I can't tell any difference between the two while watching a movie. RGB does seem to make a slight difference on video games. Not necessarily better, just different.

yes. people's eyes are different and displays are often calibrated to meet one's personal tastes. choose whichever setting that pleases you the most.

I believe that RGB can be 16-235 as well, depending on the settings. Errors in settings is probably where a lot of the apparent differences between YCbCr & RGB come from. 16-235 is video range, and 0-255 is computer range.

Exactly. All digital video is stored or transmitted as YCbCr, and displayed as RGB. There has to be transcoding somewhere, and it can be in the player or the display (or even the amp). It's a straightforward and accurate process, though there are occasionally errors that can mean one will look better than the other, but there's simple rule.

RGB-Limited and Yc look the same, IMO.

RGB-Full makes any movie look go "Super Black".

The reason you are seeing black crush by setting RGB Full is because maybe your set is not compatible with that range. You should Google your set or go to avs.com to find out. As another poster said, it will look identical if properly calibrated and compatible with the full range.

its simple. you are setting the dynamic range for your display.

So if you set the PS3 to output RGB FULL then your display must also be set to display that same dynamic range ie TV must also default or be set to RGB full.

Not all tvs/displays adjust to the correct RGB video/PC levels so make sure in the settings that its set correct on the TV/display and matches what the PS3 is outputting.

RGB doesn't support BTB/WTW - you'll need to use component for that. RGB full isn't 0-255, it's 16-235 expanded/interpolated to 0-255.
