Default Speaker ohms?

I'm trying to find out how many ohms my speakers are. I looked on the back of one and the only thing that I can see is that it says Impedance 3 with a symbol that looks like a horse shoe. Is that it? Does that mean 3ohms?

Yes. That is 3 Ohms impedance. Is it a Home-theater-in-a-box speaker?

And it's not a horseshoe, , it's the greek letter Omega,

I'm assuming you want to try to use a newer receiver with older HTiB speakers?

Yes, they are from a dvd/surround sound system we had. Driver King suggested that my speakers should not be below 6ohms or I would damage my new receiver (Sony STR-DG920). I have been using them with my STR-DG800 for about two years now. They sound great. Should I really not use them anymore? Thanks for your help.

!!! No! Don't use them. Impedance really is an important factor. Even more so with trying to mix in box speaker systems and individual components. JBL, don't mix them. I don't think the DG920 is rated for 3 ohms, or even 4. It's a bad idea that could blow your receiver.

You could get these: http://www.definitivetech.com/Products/products.aspx?path=Speakers%20By%20Series|ProCinem a%20Series&productid=ProCinema%20600%20System

Used to have them at Magnolia Best Buys (18 months no interest is pretty sweet!)

Effective December 16, 2008, the Greek letter Omega will be renamed Horseshoe.
