I have a PS3 and when I watch Blu-ray movies they seem to be very dark. Has anyone had this issue? Or know the fix for it?
I know some may say it is the TV but I have a Mitsu true 1080p TV, brand new, so I know it is not the TV. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks,: |

Your TV may be new, and it's a nice TV, but you still probably need to adjust the picture settings on your TV. I had to when I got mine. It's not that your TV's sub-par, it's just at a general setting right now. You've probably got some preset picture settings, called "Theater, Dynamic, Standard, etc.," read the manual to find out more about these, and pick which you like best. Then, put in a top-PQ movie and adjust it to your pleasure.

When I watch The Discovery Theater (Planet Earth) It is awsome viewing. Why should I have to change it to watch a movie?

Well, I actually have my cable HD at different picture settings than my PS3. I am running a PS3 to my JVC 1080p RPTV at 1080p, so my info may not be the best for you. How are you putting the cable signal into your TV? I'm assuming your PS3 is going in via HDMI. I'm not dead sure why, but I do have the different settings. For TV viewing, I don't use Theater mode, but I do w/ the PS3, and for viewing any movie. I found it to look better like this. Also, how is your room lit when watching PE vs. watching a PS3 movie? That can make a difference, and I find it to be quite crucial when watching movies, as you probably do.
I don't know all the intrinsic details, but like I said, I noticed a difference on my TV. I do think it has something to do w/ the signal transmission. Besides, the source material will be different, as well. Maybe the movies you're watching are meant to be dark, like The Prestige. Last edited by nhaase; 04-17-2007 at 04:30 AM. |

I will see if the set has a option for viewing modes. I never thought about that. My wife is going to kill me. One more setting to mess with before watching a movie. thanks for the help.

The PS3 also has a color space setting (RGB vs Yrb) you could try that.
Sony Blu-ray Discs have test patterns to help you adjust settings if you know how to use a color bar. While in the main menu, press 7669 If you have the T2 Blu-ray it has the THX optimizer. I would put the TV display in it's "flat" setting (user, standard, or maybe movie, etc, Wihch one is it depends on the tv), adjust the PS3 input, and then check other sources like DVD players VHS machines and cable boxes. Some channels can be way off from standard. |
