I am sure this is a Lucas thing but what is the hang up with getting this on Blu Ray. It seems the logical choice for his perfectionist ideal.

I think you're pretty generous. It took 7 years for DVD to see Star Wars.. but who knows..

I read somewhere a little while back that he was working on converting all of them into 3-D technology. I'm sure once he does that and releases them in theaters, the blu release will soon follow. couple years down the road I'm sure.

It's all about money, and finding just the right time to release them.
The DVDs sold in record numbers the first time IV-VI were released in 2004. Lucas waited until the format was mainstream before releasing them (by 2004, VHS movies were either no longer being sold in most stores, or were a very minor part of the movies on the shelves). Pretty much everyone, from the earliest DVD adopter, to the (then) most recent format convert, were clamoring for these movies to come out. The anticipation that was building in people's minds pretty much guaranteed that the second these were released, they would sell like gangbusters. If the Star Wars films had been released on DVD a lot earlier (or if the Blu-Ray versions were released now), while they would still sell a lot of copies, the same level of anticipation and the feeling of "I have to have it NOW!!!!" wouldn't exist. If these were to come out early in the format's life, then when more people gradually adopt the format, since there will be a ton of movies for them to pick from, they may look at Star Wars as just being an existing catalog title that they can pick up at their leisure. They will have so much 'catching up' to do with all of the titles available that they may not necessarily head right for that release. But, if you hold it looming over everyone's head and get them thinking "WHY ISN'T THAT OUT YET???!!! WHEN WILL IT BE RELEASED??!!! WHAT THE HELL??!!", then there's more of a build up that will result in more instantaneous impulse buys when it finally does come out. I do look forward to them coming out. I have a love/hate relationship with the changes to the original films. I like a few of the changes, but dislike many of them, and wish that in addition to the newer versions, GOOD, cleaned up (meaning digitally mastered like many old movies are, but without the actual alterations to be movies) versions of the original editions would come out on Blu-Ray. Having said that, I've come to accept the updated versions, and I'm sure we will see more changes and updates when they finally hit Blu-Ray. The one change that I actually HOPE they make is updating the lightsaber effects in the original Trilogy. Of all of the special effects from the original versions of the movies, those are the ones that (IMO) stand out like a sore thumb more than any other, and yet it's one of the effects that for whatever reason were not touched in 1997 for the theatrical rerelease, or in 2004 for the DVD release (which did contain additional changes). I actually find it amazing that they weren't able to make that particular update in time for the DVD (especially considering that Lightsaber use/screen time was more limited in the original films with no more than 2 sabers on screen at once because of how complicated the effect was to do back then), yet were able to have a whole friggin army of Jedi in Episode II with lightsabers all over the place with no problem. Given the fact that there was limited lightsaber numbers screen time in the original films, with today's effectings, it shouldn't take very long at all for someone to go in and make that update. It will be interesting to see what changes might even be made to the prequels when they come out. I think it's a safe bet that we will see a CGI Yoda in Episode I (since it was the only prequel in which a puppet was used instead of CGI). In fact, on the EP III DVD, one of the documentaries features a clip from Episode I with Yoda talking, but he is now CGI instead of a puppet. I actually welcome this change because the EP I puppet never looked right (though, in a perfect world, the original version would still be offered as an option, for the purists out there). That being said, I hope they leave Yoda in Eps V and VI alone (or, at least only update him very sparingly, if they feel the need to make updates at all). |
