Default 5.1 Dolby Digital vs 7.1 Dolby Digital

Can anyone tell me if my current blu-ray player that supports 5.1 dolby digital, will also support the new blu-ray movies that are out with 7.1 dolby digital?

Dolby does not have any 7.1 sountracks. I think you are talking about DTS-HD MA. In that case just post your player and we can tell you if it will decode lossless audio. But make sure your speakers will even give you the full advantage or you might be bottlenecked.

i'm pretty sure DDTHD has at least 1 7.1 movie so far.

*Edit*

My bad. I think you are correct in that there are not any DTHD tracks yet.

Dolby Digital does not do 7.1 Dolby True HD does 7.1 though. All you need is a 7.1 capable receiver with an HDMI input. How old is your receiver?

If your movies are in Dolby Digital then you can play your blu-rays movies in 7.1 via HDMI or if your player has 7.1 analog. There are not any movies in 7.1 TrueHD, but Master DTS HD there are several i.e (Hellboy 2 the Golden Arm & Shoot'em Up).

Most of the new BDs coming out in 7.1 are lossless DTS-HD MA, not lossy DD 7.1 (There's no such animal LOL). The Final Countdown was released in both DD TruHD 7.1 and DTS-HD MA 7.1. Anyway no matter what your current BD player is, if it doesn't support DTS-HD MA or DD TruHD then you are out of luck except for the older LPCM 7.1 releases. There were only 5 titles released in 2008 in LPCM 7.1, compared to the 39 DTS-HD MA titles released in 2008. So better hope your player supports DTS-HD MA.

Dolby Digital maxes out at 5.1. Dolby Digital ES is a matrixed system (no discrete channel) that delivers 6.1.

Dolby Digital Plus is used to augment the limitations of DD by increasing the number of channels that can be encoded. This is a lossy codec, just like Dolby Digital.

Dolby TrueHD can go from mono to 7.1 losslessly.

OP: You need to list your BD player and receiver for us to answer your question adequately.

Yes that's true, but I don't think there were any DD + 7.1 releases unless it was before 2006 (blu-raystats.com lists none 2006 through 2008).

I was stating that DD +, that is, Dolby Digital Plus, doesn't have any 7.1 tracks.

Another DD TrueHD 7.1 release is The Final Countdown.

Let put somethings in perspective to answer your question!!!

While some previous post me have enlighten u to some degree, the answer to your simple question is YES!!! However, u might want to check your blu-ray player's speaker setup menu to be sure!!!

It really doesn't matter what manufactored blu-ray player u own, but what type of audio receiver you have hooked up too your player. If your player is hook up to your HDTV, then obviously the sound is 2 channel. Today, new audio receivers are now implementing HDMI & 7.1 channel speaker connections.

FYI, your audio receiver has to be able to decode the signal (Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution Audio and DTS-HD Master Audio, so check your receiver specifications for decoding if not 1, but all of these HD signals) to enjoy pure digital sound. Despite a few receivers with 7.2, 10.1 and 11.2 speaker connections, the receiver will be able to capture a blu-ray audio disc specifications.

FYI

5.1 audio receiver - 2 fronts, 2 rears, 1 center, 1 subwoofer
7.1 audio receiver - 2 fronts, 2 sides, 2 rears, 1 center, 1 subwoofer
10.1 audio receiver - 2 fronts, 4 sides, 2 rears, 1 center, 2 subwoofers

Okay, after looking at your sharp BD-player specifications, you have 5.1 audio jacks in the rear of your unit. I can only assume u have all jacks connected to a 5.1 audio receiver.

Now if u read my previous post, like I stated it doesn't matter what player you have. You must understand what I explained earlier!!!
If u want your player to play 7.1 dolby digital, then a 7.1 or higher audio receiver will be needed too capture that blu-ray's disc audio specifications. You will need too connect an HDMI & optical cable from player to the receiver to get the digital sound. Now depending on how high power the receiver is, you might only need just the HDMI cable, because some receivers have that capablity of just using HDMI.

Now with all that stated, and if u are satisfied with the current receiver or HDTV hookup, and you play a blu-ray disc's audio specs that are higher than 5.1, then the sound will be much louder coming thru the current receiver or HDTV!!!

You will a notice a difference in sound if you play a blu-ray disc that has 5.1 audio -VS- 7.1 audio, because i can thru my current system!!!

Optical cannot carry 7.1 audio
You either need analog audio or HDMI.

Whoa now. If you're going to slam someone without proper background knowledge, at least spell properly. Look at any post he has made and you will see that almost all of them pertain to audio questions.

Now, I'm going to assume u don't have a home theater system, just a blu-ray player hooked up too an HDTV my friend.

Sorry, that's not true.

Dobyblue, if u look in the rear panel of any HDTV, DVR, PS3, Blu-ray player and home audio receiver, each has all 3 connections. You can use any one or simultaneous connection for sound.

No, you can't.

Analog audio cables are RED & WHITE jacks giving you 2 channel sound (left and right channel speakers, and i thought u knew that!!!). Before HDMI was being installed on electronic equipment, Optical and Coaxial audio cable connections were used for giving u digital sound. Not many people used an Optical cable because they didn't know what it was for or have no use for it. HDMI comes along giving you audio and video from one cable. Older 5.1 audio receivers that have HDMI connections were only sufficient enough to pass sound thru the HDTV, which is still 2-channel speaker on a HDTV. Many people don't want too hear sound coming from their HDTV, so of course u want it to come from the audio receiver, and for that too happen u had to connect an Optical cable because it gives u a digital signal, therfore passing sound thru any audio receiver.

For lossy quality audio, yes.

Now newer 5.1 & 7.1 audio receivers are better equipped to pass sound without using either Analog or Optical cables which is the way it's suppose to be. Pure sound!!!

Analog 7.1 is the same as 7.1 HDMI Audio sound, bitstreamed or sent via MPCM.
Responses bolded.

He meant 7.1 analog audio. I thought you knew that.

doesn't 7.1 and 5.1 have more to do with how many speakers one has rather than the receiver per se? if you've only got 5 speakers then how can you physically do 7.1 sound? are you limited totally at that point?

Thank you for clearing that up fighthefutureofhd, I could have sworn i posted speaker setup in my first post.

With 5 speakers, and discs audio specification are higher than 5.1, then u will notice a higher sound!!!!

Well, if you have five speakers and a signal for seven, how many speakers will you hear sound from.
