In the United States Sony Pictures has released select DVD movies in what is called Super bit. For example in the standard DVD format Spiderman and Spiderman 2 were released on Super bit DVD. The Super bit process gets a special treatment where all the extra features are removed from the disc and the entire disc space of a DVD or a BLU-RAY disc bit rate is maximized to show off the highest possible picture and sound quality the format can deliver. BLU-RAY can outshine HD-DVD quality when fast moving action movies approach the maximum Video+Audio bit rate of 48 Mbit/s.
Of course extra’s could be placed on a second BLU-RAY disc but if one was going to do a 30 day early release there might not be time for extra’s. Most Super bit movies contain just one disc with no extra’s.

it's about as good as picture quality is going to get right now....

I own Spider-man 2 on SB and when played on an upscaled DVD player....it looks as close to high definition as a DVD is going to get...
