Default Maybe controversial: Marantz AV7005 vs. Onkyo SC5508 Sound quality in stereo mode

Maybe controversial: Marantz AV7005 vs. Onkyo SC5508 Sound quality in stereo mode

Hi all!

I have narrowed down my auditioning list to these two pre-amps.

How do the Marantz AV7005 and Onkyo SC5508 compare in terms of Sound quality specifically in stereo mode?

I know this will also differences to speakers especially but these two pre-amps both have similar pros and cons.

Currently I am looking at the Onkyo rather than the Marantz but some people who know own the Marantz have previously owned at least an Onkyo.

So constructive comments please

I am not sure if anyone has had the opportunity to listen to both units, but I admit I will be watching this thread, as I too am curious to see what people think of these 2 units as compared to the other as best they can.

I previously owned a Denon and now own the Onkyo.

I prefer the forward sound of the Onkyo paired with my Emotiva amps and B&W 800 Series speakers.

Like you said, others experiences may differ based on amplification and speaker models.

Sapper,

I have not listened to the SC5508 but I owned the Integra 9.8 for over 3 years. I upgraded to the 7005 about 2 months ago and have been extremely pleased. It tends to have a more "mellow" presentation and still excels over the 9.8 in the multichannel sound. The GUI isn't the best in the world and some of the setup is quirky, but I will NOT be getting rid of this processor for quite some time.

I too can't decide between the (in my case) Integra dhc-80.2 and the Marantz.

on paper it's clearly the integra/onkyo, but it seems no one on earth has heard both.

I too am going emotiva ampa (xpa-5 + xpa-2) and svs subs (sb12-sledge x 2).

I just can't seem to get past the lack of xt32 in the marantz.

please someone who's heard both pipe up!
