I'm going to see Bette Midler in concert for the first time in my life this spring.

The ambitious concert sequences (especially the final one with the helicopter approach, fireworks, etc) are amazing, with DPs such as Bob Byrne, Conrad Hall, Jan Kiesser, Laszlo Kovacs, David Myers, Owen Roizman and Haskell Wexler brought in to do cam op work.
This was about at the top of my list of movies I wanted to own on Blu-ray, even if it is a soul crushing devastating experience. Just a big ol downer. ![]() |

Even though I was never a Janis Joplin fan, but The Rose is a very good movie! It's one of my favorite films, with a superb, acting debut performance from Better Midler, who have received a well deserved Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

I am not surprised that many are taking the film at face value. This is nothing like Beaches or her songs from the late 80s/early 90s (even though I love those things too ![]() |

What an unexpected and welcome surprise! I'm definitely buying this one when it comes out. A poignant, powerful and bleak film with a career changing Bette Midler performance. Basically an honest look at the highs and lows that a person suffers in her daily life. It makes for a truly heart-breaking, but undeniably powerful portrait of an all-too-human and fragile person who gets led down the road to ruin by the very business that ironically made her.
- I love the fact that it's getting the 4k treatment. - After a string of awful covers, I just love this one. I think it captures wonderfully the essence of the movie. - While it isn't stacked in special features, I'm glad that they managed to port over the terrific old commentary. Besides, we finally get an interview with Bette Midler. |

The Rose Blu-ray REVIEW
![]() This is a truly fantastic release, guys. The Rose has been fully restored in 4K and looks stunning on Blu-ray. More importantly, however, there is a great new conversation with director of photography Vilmos Zsigmond (The Deer Hunter, Heaven's Gate) in which he discusses a wide range of topics, from lighting and "flashing"/grain in films to the changes the industry has seen and how with the switch to digital films are losing their... organic filmic qualities (and everything else that was so important to cinematographers from his generation). A must-see piece for anyone interested in film ![]() ![]() Pro-B |

You must've fell asleep from boredom by something else because, The Rose was hardly boring.
