Criterion The Rose (1979)

The Rose Blu-ray PRE-ORDER

Quote:

Bette Midler exploded onto the screen with her take-no-prisoners performance in this quintessential film about fame and addiction from director Mark Rydell. Midler is the rock-and-roll singer Mary Rose Foster (known as the Rose to her legions of fans), whose romantic relationships and mental health are continuously imperiled by the demands of life on the road. Incisively scripted by Bo Goldman and beautifully shot by Vilmos Zsigmond (with assistance on the dazzling concert scenes by a host of other world-class cinematographers, including Conrad L. Hall, László Kovács, Owen Roizman, and Haskell Wexler), this is a sensitively drawn and emotionally overwhelming melodrama that made the popular singer into a movie star as well.
Quote:
New 4K digital restoration, supervised by director of photography Vilmos Zsigmond, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD master audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray
Audio commentary featuring director Mark Rydell
New interviews with Rydell, Zsigmond, and Bette Midler
Archival interviews with Midler and Rydell, with on-set footage
PLUS: An essay by music critic Paula Mejia

That it was shot by Vilmos Zsigmond has me interested.

The ambitious concert sequences (especially the final one with the helicopter approach, fireworks, etc) are amazing, with DPs such as Bob Byrne, Conrad Hall, Jan Kiesser, Laszlo Kovacs, David Myers, Owen Roizman and Haskell Wexler brought in to do cam op work.

This was about at the top of my list of movies I wanted to own on Blu-ray, even if it is a soul crushing devastating experience. Just a big ol downer.

Even though I was never a Janis Joplin fan, but The Rose is a very good movie! It's one of my favorite films, with a superb, acting debut performance from Better Midler, who have received a well deserved Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

Agreed. The finale is overwhelming and amazing. Midler put so much passion into this film.

I am not surprised that many are taking the film at face value. This is nothing like Beaches or her songs from the late 80s/early 90s (even though I love those things too - Midler is just awesome in general).

What an unexpected and welcome surprise! I'm definitely buying this one when it comes out. A poignant, powerful and bleak film with a career changing Bette Midler performance. Basically an honest look at the highs and lows that a person suffers in her daily life. It makes for a truly heart-breaking, but undeniably powerful portrait of an all-too-human and fragile person who gets led down the road to ruin by the very business that ironically made her.
- I love the fact that it's getting the 4k treatment.
- After a string of awful covers, I just love this one. I think it captures wonderfully the essence of the movie.
- While it isn't stacked in special features, I'm glad that they managed to port over the terrific old commentary. Besides, we finally get an interview with Bette Midler.

This release has me intrigued. Haven't seen the film but after reading up on it, it seems like something I'll probably enjoy. This will most likely make it's way into my collection.

The Rose Blu-ray REVIEW

This is a truly fantastic release, guys. The Rose has been fully restored in 4K and looks stunning on Blu-ray.

More importantly, however, there is a great new conversation with director of photography Vilmos Zsigmond (The Deer Hunter, Heaven's Gate) in which he discusses a wide range of topics, from lighting and "flashing"/grain in films to the changes the industry has seen and how with the switch to digital films are losing their... organic filmic qualities (and everything else that was so important to cinematographers from his generation). A must-see piece for anyone interested in film

EDIT: Deleted my original post for unnecessary snarkism.

Glad people who dig this movie will be getting it with the Criterion shine.
