Cool PixelJunk SideScroller – OUT NOW!

www.pixeljunk.jp

Q-Games / SCEA | PSN | Strategic Action Shooter | Full-1080p 60fps | October 2011

Q-Games, developer of the award-winning PixelJunk series, returns this summer with a nostalgic take on the series with its new side-scrolling shooter, PixelJunk™ SideScroller. Based on the unlockable stage from PixelJunk™ Shooter 2, PixelJunk SideScroller is a complex and dynamic fluid simulation system, which fills the game world with flowing liquids and hazardous gases, while putting a new spin on arcade shooters. Blast holes in walls or use your ship itself to drill past scorching hot magma. The fluids react in real-time to the player’s actions and to other liquids, creating unique and exciting situations with every play.

Dodge flurries of alien bullets and strategically upgrade weapons as you battle your way through sweeping stages full of hazardous fluid and endless shooting mayhem. Each player’s goal is to get to the end of each level, while gathering scattered coins for points and protecting themselves from the barrage of enemy attacks. Players can look forward to brand new levels and ferocious boss attacks along the way.

KEY FEATURES
  • Stages as Puzzles – Players attempt to change the terrain and environment around them to progress. It takes strategy, planning and addictive replay to succeed.
  • Vector-Like Visuals – Water, magma, metal – and many other exciting fluids – get the PixelJunk treatment. Dodge pixelated magma-splosions as you navigate your ship through various reinvented environments.
  • Customize Your Arsenal – Retrofit your ship to match your style of play on the fly by switching between sophisticated weaponry to suit your strategic needs. Search for hidden Power Up items and upgrade your arsenal of weapons to unleash massive destruction!
  • Fully Adjustable Difficulty – Fear not! Play at your own pace by choosing your preferred difficulty setting. Checkpoints are plentiful, so PixelJunk SideScroller will keep pulling you back with its bubblingly addictive gameplay.
  • Online Rankings and YouTube Uploading – Share your scores and game footage with the world.

oh man, that's unlockable stage from Shooter 2 was difficult. I'm going to assume this will be on the same difficulty level as the other PJ games, not easy like Shooter. Still, it looks like fun! Definitely going to buy it

Half of what made the escape difficult was the temptation to shoot everything and collect the points though.

Oh that looks sweet. I always thought their art style would be a good candidate for this type of game.

Dylan Cuthbert's demonstrating PixelJunk lifelike and SidesScroller for PlayStation Blog live, NOW!

http://www.nowlive.com/ms/sonyplaystatione3booth

This is the first direct feed footage I've seen. Funky vectors!

update: SideScroller on now.

Different weapons, weapon upgrades, checkpoints (none of this was in the bonus level in PJS2) still challenging, High Frequency Bandwidth soundtrack again. New elaborate bosses!

I love the HUD in SideScroller, PJS2's was much better but now it doesn't look tacked on at the bottom at all.

This is the most comprehensive gameplay video I've found, washed out but you can reference the screenshots:

E3 Replay: PixelJunk sidescroller Brings Retro Homage, Particles Galore to PSN

Doesn't reveal much more but there's direct-feed gameplay video.

Sidescroller looks awesome. Also: I just finished PJ Shooter 2 and unlocked the Sidescroller-like level, man that's hard. Didn't spend a ton of time with it, but it's definitely challenging (not leastwise because your weaponry is so weak and lame for the things coming at you).

Sidescroller doesn't seem to have that problem though, so I'm stoked to see how Q-Games takes on the prospect of bullet-hell shooters.

I like how Q-Games used the beast's flexible stomach lining effect on the flesh of the boss at the end of the trailer. As well as looking cool it gives a bit more feedback about where you're hitting which other vector graphic games usually don't without ricochet lines.

We don’t have an official release date for PixelJunk sidescroller yet, but rest assured we’re hard at work making it oodles of fun all the while incorporating retro goodness, love, and a little bit of cheese(?) into it. What treasures does this veritable pantheon of old-school gaming hold? We can’t go into the details yet, but expect to get riddled in alien bullets, science fiction in-jokes, and if you’re a tried and true PixelJunkie, you may even notice an Easter egg or two we’ve included just for you!
Reward for 100%ing PJS2 or just random things like the giant pink diamond?

I dunno, I can't stomach attempting to 100% PJS2. The online component is garbage because people just disconnect when they're going to lose, making it so you can never win a match (and contrary to what the game documentation claims, this happened to me three matches in a row where people disconnected and I got zero credit for it).

It's not that the trophy is (or even should be) that hard, but when the servers can't figure out that I'm winning 7 to 0 and there's a disconnect but doesn't award me the win, then I can't be bothered to earn that stupid trophy.

100% would 'just' be beating the sidescroller level in PJS2.

Did you rescue all the survivors and collect all the diamonds?

Another path opens up, I'm pretty sure it hints at it when you beat the final boss without having collected everything.

Q: How does the weapon upgrading work? Do you have a favorite weapon to use?

SideScroller has three weapons you can switch between to help you make it through the game: a machine gun, a laser beam, and some bouncing bombs (they sound cute, but they’re deadly). You start each level with all weapons at level 1, but you can collect power ups by defeating certain enemies. Collecting a power up will upgrade the weapon you currently have equipped by one level, and there are five levels total.

I like switching between all the weapons as I play. My main weapon is my machine gun, great for flying enemies. I’ll switch to my laser for more precise, pinpoint attacks against strong enemies or flying enemies that are lined up one after the other. The laser can pierce through multiple enemies, so those guys are asking for it! Then, I’ll switch to the bombs for enemies that are clinging to ceilings and floors. Bombs bounce along walls, so those guys won’t see what’s coming.

But that’s just me. One of the great things about the weapons system in SideScroller is you can play how you want! You won’t be required to use a certain weapon to defeat a specific enemy, so if you want to take The Bomb Challenge and go through the game using just the bomb weapon, you can do that! Changing which weapon(s) you’ll use to progress through the game will bring a different flavor to the experience, so have fun experimenting!
Quote:
Q: Some people think the PixelJunk games are rather difficult. Has there been anything done or added in SideScroller to help them out?

We’ve implemented a robust difficulty system so players will be able to choose how they want to play. There are four difficulty modes total ranging from Casual to Brutal. There are a lot of core gamers who’ve never played a shmup. If you are one of those people, Normal difficulty is for you. Is Normal kicking your butt? Try Casual. Are you experienced with the genre? Hard is for you. Hard difficulty mode boasts new enemies, higher enemy HP, and enemy bullets fly at you a lot faster than Normal mode. Let’s not forget our old friend Brutal mode, which is there for those of us who just don’t get that heart-thumping thrill from playing the game on Hard anymore.

SideScroller also features a handy checkpoint system. If you make a mistake and your ship ends up getting blown to bits, you will respawn at a nearby checkpoint. Better yet, you’ll keep all the weapon power ups you’ve collected up until the time you initially cleared that checkpoint. The checkpoint system is a handy feature that will be sure to prevent any hair pulling out of frustration. However, keep an eye on your remaining lives. If you run out, it’s game over. You’ll be able to start from the checkpoint, but your score will reset and your power ups will cease to be!
