Default The difference between Blu-ray & DVD hard to see (CNN Money FUD article)

CNN Money made this ridiculous statement in a recent article:

Too bad no one seems to care about hi-def DVDs. The differences between Blu-Ray and DVD are hard to see on a TV less than 50".

I have a 46", and the difference between Blu-ray and DVD are VERY noticeable. I haven't seen Blu-ray on anything smaller than my TV, but I'm guessing it would also stand out. Whoever wrote the CNN article is a knob.

It's not CNN money, they just copied the article written by Eric Krangel, another idiot to join the leagues of Rob Enderle and Robin Harris.

That article was written by a bitter, X-Box 360 fan boy with an optional HD-DVD paperweight.

Pay it no mind. He obviously doesn't know what he's talking about.

You can see the difference on a 12" screen for crying out loud!! Only way you can't see the difference is either you are blind or you are stubborn and just don't want to see it.

my 37" 720p LCD looks GLORIOUS with Blu-ray..... and I can probably tell the difference much further back than my normal seating position.

so basicly the diffence between VHS and DVD was almost nothing compared to the diff between DVD and BLU.

dvd vs. vhs is something a little different.

no rewind, chapters/ scene selection, extras, size convenience, dvd's use with computers. just to name a few off the top of my head.

And I can see a huge difference with my 16.4" laptop PC. The only movies that I can't see a big difference is when they have really crappy BD transfer, such as T-2.

As for the "DVDs work with computers" bit...

My friend Cam actually used to have a computer that played VHS tapes.

Anyway, the article is BS... at my local Blockbuster, they have a 37" HDTV playing Blu-ray movies, and everyone in the checkout line is just like...

I've actually run into people there specifically asking where the Blu-rays were, after deciding to buy a player.

That's funny, because I got a cheap BD player for my mother, and I can hardly see any kind of difference at all on the 25 inch screen. HD is easily distinguishable from flat SD on the set, but the upscaled DVD just looks great on that small of a size.

Upscaled is easily distinguished on my own 42 inch set though. I'd guess the point where it becomes immediately noticeable for the average person is around 30 inches, although certain things will benefit less from the difference (e.g., flat traditional animation). Others might just not have perfect vision, something I must admit is true about myself even. In all honesty, I've had glasses for years but I just never wore them... then I got into BD and found that glasses made the whole thing so much better, even when viewing from a close range (I actually only have trouble seeing very far away).

That's right, to say nothing of the difference between interlaced and progressive native displays.

But BD doesn't LOOK that much better because of the law of diminishing returns. For example, 720p looks a lot better than 480i does than 1080p does over 720p, even though on that comparison, 1080p has a heavy technical advantage.

I love my Blu-Ray, it's so much sharper the DVD. Oh this is on my 26" 720p.

As far as I know I don't have 20/20 vision, and even on a small 34" TV I can notice a lot of difference. I did not read the artical because I could not connect to the link. Does he mention high resolution audio at all or did he already blow his ears listening to music way to loud also my god.

Some people are not going to be happy until they convince people downloads are good enough. Too damn bad there is no one on this site who belives that.

I have to say the picture is crispier with Bluray but it's not like the super big difference with DVD. Only Blurays that really stand out are CGI Animations such as the Pixars.
