Default Several of the top 10 highest grossing 2023 movies are "money losers"

Isn't that mad? Look at the top 10 highest grossing movies of 2023:

1. Barbie - $1,441,820,453
2. The Super Mario Bros. Movie - $1,361,367,353
3. Oppenheimer - $955,244,872
4. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 - $845,555,777
5. Fast X - $714,414,576
6. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse - $690,516,673
7. Full River Red - $673,596,577
8. The Wandering Earth 2 - $604,460,538
9. The Little Mermaid Disney - $569,626,289
10. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One - $567,535,383

Now as far as i understand, Fast X, The Little Mermaid and Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning part 1 are all considered "money losers" ie they arguably did not make a profit for their studios based on how much they cost to make.

Hollywood accounting is different or strange.

Quote:
Under net profits accounting, various individuals and entities, including the studio itself, are paid before the books on a given film are balanced. A film company can assign costs to a film - including distribution, advertising and overhead - that may have no relationship to actual expenses.

These costs are deducted from gross receipts before there is any profit calculation. Consequently, even a box-office blockbuster may show no net profits, despite yielding millions of dollars in income.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy still has yet to turn a profit.

COVID budgets (coupled with production issued on Fast X). None of those movies would've costed more than $200–225 million in normal times, and with that kind of budget they would've easily broken even or turned a profit in some cases.

Just proves that what is spent on a film many times does not reflect the quality of the film. They should try to reduce costs. Shoot more stuff overseas or away from high cost areas.

Fast X deserves it, what a mess that movie is. MI was the one that was a real shame though. Great movie, with so much effort put into it. Sad to see it struggle to turn a profit. Although they should have changed the release date and perhaps that would have helped.

Part of it is probably the budgets being so astronomically high.
