Default The cost of upgrading your collection

I have around 100 dvds and i was thinking of upgrading all of them but it will cost me twice as much ! I am waiting for blu ray to drop to £5 thats $10 each.

I mean apart from Indiana jones trilogy and some of my favorites i cant think of anything else thats not out on blu ray .

Do you have a budget that you stick too ?

I don't have a budget, but I do refrain from upgrading DVDs until the BD hits a certain price. If it's an older catalog title then I usually wait until I can get it for $15 or less.

When it comes to my spending habits, I wouldn't call myself "reckless", though I have pushed things a bit in some cases. More often than not, I try to keep to a rule of "$25 or under per title", unless its a boxset or something like that. So far, that's helped me; i think the most expensive solo Blus I bought were the "Iron Man" movies and "Beauty & the Beast", which went a dollar or two across the line.

I usually try to find good deals when upgrading DVDs' to Blu. Warner and Disney both have some decent upgrade programs going, which I use. I try not to repurchase until the Blu-ray drops to around $10, or I try to sell the DVD somewhere at about 50% of the cost of the new blu-ray to try and recoup some of the $$ I spent on the DVD's in the first place.

I've upgraded 40 some so far, and have the LOTR: EE's, the star wars saga and the Indiana Jones trilogy to go. So around 50 movies total. I still have around 200 dvds, but none of them are things I'm likely to upgrade as they're things I don't watch often and/or don't care about upgrading to blu like simple dramas and comedies etc.

I mainly have only upgraded when I found a $10-15 or less deal, so a decent chunk of change, but not a ton.

I'd estimate I have around 100 more titles I 'wouldn't mind' upgrading to Blu-ray. My limit for upgrades is ~$15 (with a few notable exceptions), but I prefer to try to find them for ~$10. I also try not to purchase upgrades ahead of time in a lump, but instead wait until I'm actually itching to watch the film again; seems to help me avoid repurchasing unnecessary titles that I didn't really want as much as I thought in the end (though I did break that rule last year for the Black Friday week-long sales).

It's actually $7.13.

I have well over 500 dvds, but I typically only buy blu-rays of my favorite films when they are on sale for dirt cheap.

I tend to wait until a blu-ray is $9.99 or below. I will almost never spend more than that unless I know the price is extremely unlikely to go below that - many animated films, for example, as well as larger packages and special editions. In that case, I pay very close attention to the Amazon price history on this site and monitor the Hot Deals sub-forum here.

No budget for me. I try to get it as cheap as possible though. If it's a movie I love, I don't mind spending $$ on it, but for other movies I keep track of prices on Amazon and check out the Trading Forum often.

no budget for me either. i've spent the last 16 months building my collection with mostly bargain titles. even with expensive sets i usually wait for a significant price drop then i buy. just be patient. u dont have to upgrade ur dvd collection in one swoop. im still upgrading everyday.

First it would be best to sell the DVD, and then to search for the best price of that particular title in BD for a month or longer (eventually as long as you can finding the right price point).

The problem is most DVDs are fairly worthless these days and often not worth the hassle of selling. It's ok if you live somewhere you can have a yardsale etc. But most aren't worth hassling selling online as you won't make much after paying shipping etc.

So most all of mine I upgraded I just either gave the DVD to a friend or family member or donated it to Goodwill.

I've recently sold my copy of High and Low for 20$ which is a fair price. Now I can add 10 bucks and get the Blu. This is usually the case with my Crits as I have no trouble finding buyers. For my other DVDs, I only upgrade if I really like the movie, and only after I've sold the DVD, even if it's for 3$.

Amazon and the marketplace are my best friend. I very rarely have to pay over $15 for any movie or over $25 for any TV season.

I buy any new ones that come out that I like, recent ones, King's Speech, Black Swan, Fighter, ones that are coming, True Grit, LOTR, Star Wars etc. whatever the price is.

For past titles, catalog titles, I put them all in the Price Tracker and then have patience and only bite when they go under $10, knowing most will sooner or later, knowing there will be deals on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. For Criterions, I wait till the sale that's coming sometime this Summer. Patience = savings.

Jumped in with both feet and sold 140 DVD's on Ebay, almost all I had except for some box sets and a few out of print ones and 20 or so not on Blu yet. Probably 20 out of the 140 were crap DVD's, mostly blind buys not to be missed at all. Didn't want to go through the hassle of selling them all individually so I sold them as one big lot on Ebay. Yeah, I took a resale hit, but it was worth it not to have to deal with 140 trips to the post office. Then I made another $125 for 10 Disney DVD's sold in a lot that the kids don't watch anymore since they got older. So I had a pretty decent chunk of change to restart my collection all in Blu. Looked for the best deals I could find and scoured the coupon sites to save some more, that and bought a few like new Blu's on Ebay. So I've gotten pretty close to where I use to be and waiting for some of my other favs to become Blu worthy. And no I do not want to calculate how much money I spent on the standard def DVDs I sold ....

I actually didn't collect until Blu-ray (and I'm glad I didn't), I only had a few DVDs (not counting anime or the TMNT cartoons), must of which were collections:

LOTR EEs, Indiana Jones trilogy, TMNT trilogy and CGI movie, Star Wars, Spider-Man trilogy, Superman and Harry Potter movies.

I think that's it. I just need to upgrade 3 of my sets now, and after this year there will only be the Indiana Jones trilogy.

I buy a lot of used blu-rays for a fraction of the price for new. I've built up my collection fast that way and have replaced my DVDs in no time at all. Even when I buy new, I try to find the lowest price possible.

I have a DVD collection that is 2500+ so, no upgrades for me, I am just starting with the blues but as several guys on this thread, I wait for good deals on ebay and amazon, and movies that I really like I dont have a problem spending a good buck on.

Here is the deal though, I am in Argentina, every single disc movie in Argentina is about 40 dollars, and prices dont ever go down so....I always have to buy on Ebay, several movies to make it worth the shipping.

For example, the back to the future trilogy sells for 400 pesos, that is about 100 dollars.

So.....
