Here is the cnet review on the Toshiba with the SD upconversion. They claim its a bust and not worth anything.

I was weary about this as well and got a sweet deal on Black Friday from Circuit City on an Element 37" LCD 720p. My parents have a 52" Sony 1080p and the SD channels looked terrible but this cheap lil Element looks just like my old Trinitron on the regular cable channels and I could not be happier!!

SD always typically depends on the source (digital or analog).. tv settings, sd upconversion in the tv and cable box.

well yes SD would look better on your 37" compared to a 52" because the SD picture is not being stretched out as much on your set

That depends on your player as well.I have a 2001 Panasonic DVD-H2000 DVD player that cost $1800 new.It was their top of the line player weighing in at 39 pounds and loaded with video enhancements.I recently compared it to the standard dvd pic quality of my Panasonic BD30 and it seems to have a better pic.

PS3 makes SD DVDs look almost as good as HD. I've seen another upscaling DVD player that makes it looks worse, so use the PS3 and your all set. Other than that I don't think the HDTV itself can help.
