British TV produced many great writers in the 60s and 70s and among the very best was Jack Rosenthal whose work is well represented in several box sets. He had the rare talent for portraying ordinary people convincingly and finding humour in the most mundane situations. While he was responsible for several great TV films including The Knowledge, his only cinema works were Yentl and The Chain, the latter financed by Film Four.
The Chain is a simply brilliant comedy equating seven people moving house on the same day with the seven deadly sins, linked by the presence of a philosophical removal man played by Warren Mitchell. The backdrop of London divided by Thatcherism is present but not over-stressed. The cast is perfect and the writing shines. I'd buy anything written by Rosenthal if it appeared on blu ray but The Chain shows the biggest potential for improvement on its 1.66:1 non-anamorphic DVD. The 2003 all-star remake of Ready When You Are Mr McGill might also be suitable for blu as Universal were involved in its production How can you not love a film where an extra has her door mistakenly knocked on and responds with "You can't come in. Even Mrs McGuire doesn't come in and she likes the smell of cats" |
