Resuscitating an old thread to ask:

Has anyone else bought this set, to discover that there's a flaw in Predators 2?

My copy hits a snag at 1:24:38 — I suspect it's the layer change, but don't know for sure. On my BD player the disc stalls and can't recover; on my PC the disc staggers for a few seconds, the image pixellates, and then it lurches back into play.

Amazon replaced the set; the replacement has the same problem. I've identified there are two masters, so presumably Fox has recognised the problem, but Amazon says it can't make sure which one they would send me even if I bought a new copy, and because they've already replaced it once they won't replace it a second time. I e.mailed Fox, to ask if they can help by swapping the disc for a working one, but after ten months got a reply that says I'd have to talk to Amazon.

Reports on Amazon's website show that people have had the same problem with the individual release as well.

Has anyone else had any similar experience of flaws with this disc? How did you resolve it?

I had no issues with my set... all 3 films work perfectly fine... Maybe you need to update your blu-ray software... I had few problems with my earlier blu-ray movies and when I updated the softare they worked fine...

EDIT: I checked my Predator 2 BD again at 1:24:38 and no issues, everything seems ok.

Thanks for the reply, mdking, much appreciated.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's the disc. I've tried both the original and the replacement on half a dozen various players and PC drives — I even took it to my local video shop and had them check it out on three of their machines — and the fault happened on each one at the same point each time.

Can I ask roughly when you bought yours? Maybe the stock's been replaced — although I have no idea how many copies Amazon has or hasn't sold ... who knows what they've got still sitting on their warehouse shelves? They don't seem to know themselves, judging from their customer service replies.

Maybe you could compare the codes on the underside of your disc vs. mdking's? There should be a code for each layer (if its a 50GB disc). If they differ, then you should contact Fox again with that info.

Ta, Dave.

There are apparently two different batch numbers in the laser-etched ring at the centre of the disc — A0101013349-A911 4000 / A0101013349-B911 2000, the one I've got, which is defective, and apparently the same number, but ending in 1000 instead of 2000, which is reportedly OK. I don't know if the defective one being the higher number means that more recent pressings have the problem, and only the early ones are OK, which is why I'm trying to confirm before I buy a new copy. Or it could be just one batch of pressings that was faulty, and nothing to do with the internal serial number, and I was just unlucky to get two faulty copies. The difficult bit is that I have no way of telling, apparently, without spending more money.

I put all that in my e.mail to Fox, and asked for confirmation that there'd been a corrected one issued, but they never answered that bit at all, just told me that for any reports of faults I'd have to contact Amazon.

I've just had another reply from Amazon — they've replaced the set once, so they reckon under their rules they've done their bit. Thing is, I still haven't got a non-faulty disc, so it isn't really resolved.

Amazon's stock control system apparently isn't able to say whether I'd get a new or an old disc if I bought a new copy of just the stand-alone title (they're the same EAN and ASIN numbers, so it's not surprising), but it's looking like I'll just have to either take my chances and buy a copy of the stand-alone, or else put up with one bodgy disc in the set that only plays (sort of) on my PC.

Ah well.

I got the same numbers on my disc... I remember back when I bought my set, there was a thread reporting bad batches in circulation... Most of them were from HMV and Amazon.... That's why I bought mine from Zavvi.com. I bought mine last year. You are not the only one having this problem check the following thread, hope it helps

Thanks, mdking.

I guess I'll buy a replacement copy of Predator 2, and just keep my fingers crossed. ;-)

What's the subtitle situation with this set? I've been looking to buy it, great price, but I'm a little worried about the language options.

Kanon, I have the set without the DVD copies, but the Blu-ray discs are the same. The available choices are ... a little eclectic, but perhaps its because all three discs are coded for all three regions.

Predator has subtitles in English SDH, Bulgarian, Cantonese, Croatian, Estonian, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Icelandic, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovenian, Thai and Turkish. It has audio tracks in English (DTS-HD MA 5.1), Hungarian (DD 2.0), Polish (DD 5.1), Russian (DTS 5.1), Thai (DD 5.1) and Turkish (DD 2.0).

Predator 2 has subtitles in English SDH, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Norwegian and Swedish. It has audio tracks in English (DTS-HD MA 5.1), French (DTS 5.1) and German (DTS 5.1).

And Predators has subtitles in English, English SDH, Arabic, Cantonese, Croatian, Danish, Hungarian, Italian, Mandarin, Norwegian, Serbian, Slovenian and Spanish. It has audio in English (DTS-HD MA 5.1), Hungarian (DD 5.1), Italian (DTS 5.1) and Spanish (DTS 5.1).

Thanks MacEachaidh! Sadly, I was looking for Spanish subs (and it looks like they have every language on earth except that one :P ), so I'll have to try the US releases.

I don't mind that much watching without the subs, but It's a problem when I watch with family and friends.

Quick update: thanks for all your responses, mdking — looks like the problem's sorted.

I bought the single-disc release of Predator 2, which has finally arrived from Amazon UK (not Amazon's fault, it was part of an order with a couple of other titles that kept getting delayed in release, so it's been waiting a while). I span it up, and ... it has none of the stalling or pixellating problems of the previous copies.

So I'm content to say it was the disc, not my players, and it's been fixed.

I'm glad you can finally watch the film. I think I've watched Predator 2 either two or three times, and two of those times I fell asleep...
Very rare for me, may I add.

I guess tastes differ. While the plot of the first Predator is better, and it benefits from having Aahhnuld and not having Bill Paxton's wooden faux-heartiness (akin to his "Check it out!" squirmathon in Aliens), I still find it nigh unwatchable, because of all the ludicrous "my balls are so big I can't walk straight!" posturing, the truly execrable dialogue, and the OTT score. Swings and roundabouts, eh?

(And sorry mate, I forgot to thank you before! Apologies. )

Predator is a classic. My dad hates Arnie and even he loves Predator!
Predator 2 is not up to the first one but still damn good fun and very good.

Predators on the other hand...good (and stunning PQ) for the first half. As soon as the PQ drops though (second half) so does the film though. OK but nowhere near as good as the other two.

Predators was a lame rehash of the original.

It's not often I finish watching a violent sci-fi action/horror thinking: 'Huh, Topher Grace really was the best thing about that.'
