Default Robbie Bach of MS = Captain Obvious

Quote:
"Just coming up with something that's faster and prettier isn't going to be sufficient," said Bach, 47. "The life cycle for this generation of consoles — and I'm not just talking about Xbox, I'd include Wii and PS3 as well — is probably going to be a little longer than previous generations."
Well wouldn't you know it...

Everybody wants to copy Nintendo.

What does this entail for gaming? If Sony and now MS give up on the more power/better graphics route where does it leave hardcore console gamers? Buying the latest Nvidia graphics card or changing with the times?

It's weird because when the Wii was first announced and my friends and I all talked about the controller, we are all hardcore gamers, we were all excited. We thought it was a great idea. My wife's younger brother and i lined up overnight to preorder it.

Then about a month after we got it the excitement wore off.

I'm glad that the system is exposing gaming to more people but I'm unsure as to what that will do to the future of gaming. I think the best use of a gaming platform was what Nintendo has done with the DS in Japan.

I want more hardcore games for the PS3 and 360. Games requiring level grinding or twitch reflexes that don't just look pretty.

I'd hate to play on a PC!

I need to be able to just power up the console, pop in a disc, kick back on the couch and get sucked into the game...

On a PC, you need to start the computer, wait for the OS to finish loading, then the game, sit in a more uncomfortable chair by your desk and mostlikely end up playing on your keyboard.

Sure you can hook it up to the TV, and buy an extra controller for it... but all those extras on top of a high end gaming card (that in return needs a higher end PC in the first place) is a big turn off.

If there will ever be a PS4 which will showcase even better graphics than we do have right now I am willing to shell out some ca$h for that!

For me I feel microsoft will through very carefully planed steps damage or in the last act of defiance toss the one straw that breaks the camels back...

The more I see of this windows experience being tossed into games the more fearful I become, I don't think the cranky old men are going to like what ms has in store for them...

I switched from PC gaming to Console gaming because the games I play just aren't on PCs anymore. The old party system RPGs like Wizardry, Might and Magic, and the ilk have vanished. Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights just aren't the same. They are great games, but already played them to death. The rest of the new games are all FPS or more Civilization. I also got tired of having to constantly upgrade every couple of years to the newer faster systems. For the price of a couple of parts I could have bought a console that will last twice as long as just the bits and pieces I upgraded with. Then if you upgraded too much you had problems where you had to upgrade everything because it just wasn't compatible anymore. Upgrade a mobo without the right hard drive connections, oops, gotta get a controller card, oh no space, well, lets pull everything and upgrade the hard drive. It went on and on.

There are pc users who upset about live being injected into there games.. Older pc gamers are generally more rebellious about it.

Its there slow attempt to force pc gaming into what "x" live is like many are not interested into this new vision, and when they make the final push you will eventually lose the hard core, the communities will collapse and then the younger gamers will leave... and then its over..

Just how I feel the path MS is taking..

Not that its the only route its just my gut feeling...

That's one view of it.... but I think one of the ultimate goals of Games for Windows is the implementation of multiplayer between PC players and console players. So far Shadowrun is the only game to do this.. and it has worked AWESOMELY there.

IF they go further with this and implement cross platform play in more and more games..... it could actually be one of the best things to happen to PC gaming in a long time.

Ah no there are other things being injected consider shadow run the windows for gamer lite...

As the adding of achievements and xbox live being dumped into pc games.. which you would find the more older games to be extremely appalled by...

There is nothing wrong with cross platforming playing but the path there taking I think is dangerous.. who keeps pc gaming going.. its the communities who support games with mods and extra content.. if they go...

But maybe your right and im over looking this, but all I see is alot of upset pc gamers who feel like there world is being taken away piece by piece...

I think that's more a fear of change. Who doesn't like having a little window pop up that says "hey.... you did something awesome?" I remember a lot of PS3 fans thought acheivements were rediculous and awful...... until they got trophies and really liked them. I would think that PC gamers would also enjoy many of the advanced communication features of XBL as well

I'm not a PC gamer...... and I don't know much about mods..... but I would think that as long as their are games in the much less controllable pc environment..... mods will find a way to exist.

Well personally I don't care for trophy but ive made my peace with them... but only because it makes others happy...

I think alot of pc users are worried that microsoft as the final push would charge them to play online, that is there final fear... and I worry that might be whats going there Microsoft mindset...

Im a pc player as well so I feel I understand there worries.. im sensing personally that its the old games for me...

Follow the $$$. Nintendo is making tons of it and I'm sure Microsoft and Sony are noticing.

So far they've actually done the opposite and allowed Silver console players play for free in Games for Windows games.

I understand but the fear is there.. also what happened with Vista cannot happen again.. through im going to veto windows 7 unless there is much better legacy support..

If my own microsoft games don't work with 7 there is something wrong... and they managed not to work with vista and there is no game that actually replaces alot of them, in size and scope.. nor evil will be...

There will be no game to replace freelancer a very dear game to me, and with a very large mod community... It cost a man his company and his soul to get that released...
