Smile Question regarding LG Burner and AVCHD

I have a Sony Hdr-SR1 camera that records high Def in AVCHD. I just bought an LG GGW- H20 L internal Blu Ray burner which was at thetop of the list on PC World's Top 10 List. Oddly it will burn AVCHD onto DVD's but not onto Blu Ray disks. On them it burns something different BVAD or BvLD (I'm sorry I can't remember but there seem to be two and they look something like those with 4 letters each)

Anyway I also bought a Sony BX1 player which plays both disks just fine. But why can't I burn AVCHD on a Blu ray? Plus, does it matter? I just thought it would be best to keep the original format for best quality. I have not yet burned a DVD and a Blu ray in the 2 formats and then compared the quality. Actually my TV isn't even Hi def.

This video hobby is awfully confusing. The huge number of formats is like learning an entire new language. I just want to be able to save the footage in the best quality I can and also in a form that can actualy be viewed years from now. Sheesh I still need to figure out 1080P vs 1080i. What's up with that?

The only reason I even have time for this right now is because I was laid off from my job the day after Christmas. BTW Happy New Year.
