I want to check this one out but I dont know about buying . I live in las vegas and a co- worker that was born and raised here actually saw some of the atom bomb tests! How sick is that?!

Saw this years ago while at University, it is really great, to see the escalation in size of the bombs is amazing/terrifying. Not sure how much replay value this release has but it has been added to my Netflix Que. If you are at all interested in the history of the atomic bomb at least give it a rental you will not be disappointed.

Agreed. It's haunting and frightening.

Also, the soundtrack is riveting -- a masterpiece, really -- and adds much to the effect of the film. I've not heard a track quite like it anywhere else. If there is a soundtrack to the apocalypse, this would be it.

For anyone interested here, the Blu-ray has been silently "updated" and here is my brief user review of that:

This is not a review about the movie itself, but a note to anyone interested that the Blu-ray disc has received a silent "upgrade" in 2023. This has the same exact UPC and has the same product listing at Amazon, however the front and back covers (which have ©2023 on them) have been slightly altered as far as the text content.

The Blu-ray disc itself now shows an authoring date of 9/27/2023. The encode is now MPEG-4 AVC, versus the MPEG-2 encode on the original disc.

The Audio Tracks are both the same "lossly" Dolby Digital, but optional English subtitles have now been included as a set-up option on the disc. You can see from the old website review that the original disc did not include them.

Basically, to be sure that you do have the updated 2023 disc or not, just check the back cover for ©2023 on the back cover bottom.

I just realized this has been remastered in 4k, but it doesn't seem to be on physical disc, only streaming:

I guess there's zero chance of this getting a UHD release?

A poster on Youtube for the trailer last year commented, "Looks to be upsampled 1080p with heavy handed post processing on top.". The reply from Atom Central:

"its a little of that and I have actually scanned the negative in 4K but its both. A lot of the film was originated in 16mm an isn't as sharp as that which originated in 35mm. Its hard to tell the difference in Standard Def and easier to determine in HD and even easier to see in UHD. Its still a work in progress."

So not sure what to make of it. The trailer is here:
