Exclamation I have a decent entry level audio setup that needs an equally decent entry level sub.

Hello my ever-helpful friends here on blu-ray.com.

You guys have helped me purchase my receiver, my speakers and my current TV, and I've become very trusting of your opinions.

If I can jump right into it, I need a subwoofer.

Bought this receiver, which lead me to buying these speakers, and now I'm looking to finally add a subwoofer to the mix.

I purchased the receiver for around $200 and the speakers for around $300, so from that I'm sure you can see the price-range I'm shooting for.

The receiver and speakers should also give you an idea of the quality I'm after. Not something bottom of the barrel, but something too high-end would be wasted on me.

The room everything is in is quite open concept with my kitchen, but really nothing in my home theatre is more than 8 feet from one another.

To make this super easy, what say you from this Future Shop list, and alternatively this Best Buy list of subwoofers?

I'm researching myself, but given there's some sales that are time-sensitive, any help would be appreciated.

Cheers guys!

After looking at you recent purchases, very nice btw, how much do you want to spend? Is $500 in your budget, or around $300??
If the higher of the two, I'd go with a SVS PB1000
[Show spoiler]SVS=AWESOME
if the latter is closer to your budget, I'd recomend the Klipsch RW-12D

I have the Polk PSW10. It's a good entry level sub. My room is a 13x13 though. It's can't hit anything below 40Hz even though the spcs say 35Hz. You can tell. But I also didn't pay $300! for it.

Just looked and realized that Futureshop is Canada. Dang that's an increase.

I'm taking a guess also that your budget is $500. I know you are in Canada and $500 is a great price for the SVS that Billy suggested.

Here is a link to a SVS distributor in Canada.

They have the PB & SB 1000 for $499 each. Getting a sub for less then $800 that can go low as 19Hz is a pretty good deal. When watching movies, you want a sub that can go low as possible, that makes for a great movie experience.

I'd say $300 (give or take) is about the high end of my budget at the moment. Definitely going to eyeball this Klipsch, thanks for the heads up.

Got any reasons as to why you picked that one? If you explained what was appealing about it, perhaps it would help me look for similar things in other models.

Thanks for your help, mate.

Every time I see that Polk PSW10 go on sale I research it and it seems like people just ****ing HATE it, haha. So far you're literally the first person I've seen on a serious enough AV website that's given it a recommendation. I do love the price that it drops for usually though (about $99 regularly).

Thanks a ton. I'll have to keep that place in mind, it's not too far from where I'm located. Future Shop and Best Buy have shipping convenience, but if there's better subs/deals to be had there, I don't mind making the trip.

My budget is more around $300 max, but thanks for the links, I'm going to check that site regardless.

Cheers.

oh yeah, on those kind of sites I don't doubt it. For my size room it's done it's job. Even though I'll be parting with it soon.

I actually owned one for some time, put it through the paces, so to speak For the price they sell for now, speaking from my own personal experience of coarse, they can't be touched
It's got great looks, pretty decent low end ( I found between 30-35hz about it, then you start to hear port noise, but this was at extreme volumes ) very high output, convenience of features with display, not overly bulky....I think they were $800 when they first hit the market, so at that price, no...but $300, IMHO
[Show spoiler]HELL YES
Anyways, just my $0.02

i want to follow up on what HAMP is suggesting. I realize that the svs subs seem a little outta your price range, but let me suggest that you take the $300 you have and save up until you have enough to buy the SVS sub. these are subs that you could live with thru upgrades of your speakers, avr's etc.

here is why i say it. the polk and sony subs are not very good and not worth spending your money. the polk sub is ok to about 40hz, just as tommyboy81 says, and that isnt not very low for movies, you will be missing the impact of the lower frequencies. eventually you will want to add what youre missing. i used to own the sony sub, actually the higher 3000 model and it was the first thing that got upgraded, it just wasnt very good.

point is save your money and buy a sub ONCE.

I know it is about 50% higher than your budget, but WELL worth the difference. Having a good sub like that will make the rest of your system seem far more expensive then what it is or should I say, will bring it to another level.

When researching for subs, of course you what the most watts you can get, but the other is how low in Hz they can go. It is hard to find a sub to go lower then 20hz for under $800 and these are only $500.

If you could, save up for it, believe me, its well worth the expense.

If anything else, make sure to visit that store and check them out.

with the psw10 i get that, what i call a boomy muffled sound when it tries to gt low. Like it's just blowing air. lol Thats the way i can describe it. Get it big time with Inception and TDKR (ending).

Now I know what you're probably asking yourself, "why the heck are you suggesting it then?" Well it's entry level.

Nothing wrong with your suggestion, it's possible he may love that sub, and don't need anything else. Some people are completely satisfied with those subs.

I've been satisfied with it for years. I paid $99 for it. For that price it's not bad. The one i had before it was 50 watt Yamaha sub that came with 5 small satellite speakers. Say what you want about that little sub but it packed a punch for it's size.

well, imo a quality sub(even a low priced one like hsu/svs etc) will make up for the deficiencies in the Low Frequency response of entry level speakers. otherwise youre buying a subwoofer that really doesnt do anything better then occupy the lfe channel. however a quality sub should be able to play up 25-100 hz rather well(tight/fast/accurate), and allow you to operate your speakers with a 100 hz crossover for a rather nice sounding system.

waiting a little bit longer and getting a better sub just makes better sense, if you ask me.

Ok, Ummm, I wouldn't go that far with it...

Which do you prefer with your subs, the polk or the Klipsch?

I use to have two of the Klipsch sub-12.

I can attest to what callas and others are saying here. The guys here gave me the same advice a few years ago and I'm glad I followed it. I saved up for a while and ended up with an HSU VTF-1 10" sub. I came from an 8" Yamaha sub I had purchased with a speaker set back in the 90's.
I have it corner loaded just behind my right speaker, crossed over at 100Hz and I'm getting down to around 23 Hz at fairly decent levels. BluBalls made an excellent suggestion for the HSU STF-2. It is comparable to my VTF-1 as it appears to have the same frequency response. I think you would enjoy that sub. Good luck in your search.

Just as others are saying, IF you can resist the urge to take ownership of the sub now and hold out until you have the extra money, and spend $500, then SVS is the route I personally would take
[Show spoiler]'Just sayin' SVS HOWEVER, I do realize that some folks just aren't into the heavy LFE, so a less beastly sub may just do the trick for you either way you decide to go...
Best of luck to you friend, and looking to hear back from you with good news about your purchase whichever route you choose

Can't go wrong with either HSU or SVS, both fine subs. This looks interesting: http://www.svsound.com/1000-series-landing
2 subs for 499, 19Hz extension. Not too shabby.
