Default RIP Honda Kills the S2000

From autoblog

Quote:
Honda's attempt to right-size its development schedule and cope with the economic downturn apparently extends beyond the cancellation of the next NSX. According to Autocar, HoMoCo is right-sizing its plans for the next two years, and that includes rethinking the development of a range of rear-wheel-drive Acuras, a new V8, a convertible based on the CR-Z and the S2000's successor.

Acura seems to be carrying the weight of the bad news, with its RWD 7-series rival, originally due out in 2015, cancelled indefinitely, along with development of a V8 engine that would allow the brand to compete with the best and brightest from Germany. The Euro-market Legend could also be on the block and there's a chance that Honda will stop developing two separate Accord models for sale in the U.S. and abroad, instead opting for one mid-size sedan to be sold worldwide.

Unfortunately, the development cease-fire also extends to Honda's smaller offerings. Honda planned to release a drop-top version of its CR-Z after the hybrid goes on sale next year, but that model has been nixed. Even more disturbingly, 2009 will be the last year of production for the S2000, with no heir apparent waiting in the wings.

We're hoping to get more details on the cut-backs as the week progresses, but needless to say, there's more than enough disappointment to go around.
Tis a sad day.

It's understandable with the current economic situation but damn. I loved the S2000. It's an amazingly engineered car. Especially with a Spoon hardtop.

The NSX is probably my favorite MR car ever made. It's a beautifully crafted car.

one of my favorite things about the nsx, you can find a used one with 200k+ miles on it..and its still 26k

let that one sink in for a minute. a former supercar with 200k miles...

A few years back my friend bought a 91' for 30k. He was happy to get it for that price.

Same, well never sat in one... But don't think I would want to drive one everyday... But the last time I got in a Miata, my head stuck through the roof and I always deep down wanted one.

Miata = best power to weight ratio for a compact sports car. I've been thinking about getting one used just for fun.

Huh. I've been waiting for a relaunch of the Prelude . . . Honda needs something to compete with the ~25k turbos that are available now. I honestly thought the S2000 was pretty unimpressive for its price, and in general. The shifting was nice, though.

Ludes have excellent resell value. If you can find them for sale. People tend to keep them.

I can't believe people are doing K20 swaps on Fit's though. That's nuts!

Honda needs to make a rear wheel drive Civic hatchback.

The handling was nice, but the lack of torque makes it very boring. Nothing like flooring it in third at 4.5k and going nowhere.

I had an Electron Blue 2001 Prelude that I loved, but I bought it in 02 and there were no manuals to be found, so I ended up getting the auto . . . BIG mistake. I still have a desire to own a manual 5th gen, but I don't think I could take the downgrade in power from what I'm used to.

I personally would take a 350z over an S2K. Although, the 350z isn't near the value it was when it came out, especially when you get into the higher trims.
