Default "fanboy" issue I have...

HD-DVD rules!!! So-I've been wanting to address this "fanboy" name you guys throw around so freely. As I've stated on numerous posts-I own both HDDVD and BD and enjoy them both. Now-I know what you're going to respond..."More MS fanboy...blah blah blah...trying to make it sound like he's not biased...blah blah blah..." But-listen to the rest. I enjoy/love movies. I have the biggest DVD collection of anyone I know. My first player in this "war" was an HDDVD player-because that's what I could afford at the time. I purchased a BD player a couple months ago, all HDMI cables, HDMI switch box, and will next be buying a new reciever (when budget allows), with movies sprinkled in as budget and availability allows. I don't understand why you have to be fully committed to one platform to not be considered a "fanboy" My home theatre is slowly coming along and every piece of it makes it better in my opinion. Just because I may not agree with something that you BD fans have to say-doesn't mean that I don't respect your opinion. And you, most certainly, will not be getting PM's that can't be quoted in public. So-my question...Is a "fanboy" someone who doesn't agree with what the general opinion is on this forum?

A fanboy would be someone who goes on general or other format forums specifically to prosthelytize for a format.

This is Blu-ray.com. To expect anything but support for Blu-ray would be foolish.

Think of any association of people, and ask whether walking into their congregation and asking them why they don't support some other association is something likely to be taken well.

I get accused of being a 360 fanboy because I think it is a better gaming platform than the PS3 (at this point anyways), but I am just a fan of videogames in general and I will probably always have every system that's out. I am a blu-ray supporter though. I don't own a HD-DVD player.

Actually, I think a fanboy is someone so self important and so in love with their own opinion that they are unwilling (or unable) to think in shades of grey that don't perfectly fit in their view of the world.

A perfect example... Before both formats launched, many die hard Blu-ray fans were on record as saying that BD was a necessity because of the additional storage capacity that 50GB provided and what that would mean for the ability to have discs that contained great looking transfers, high quality audio, and loads of supplements without having to resort to 2 discs like DVD. HD-DVD proponents were arguing that should space become an issue, bonus content could be moved to a second disc (a move that many BD proponents ridiculed). But a year later and with Blu-ray severely handicapped in terms of the bonus features that were promised to be a cornerstone of the format's success (both in software and hardware), the defense has shifted to "I don't care about extras and would prefer they not be included and take away from the AV presentation," which is perfectly valid, but it's not the same song that was sung until Blu-ray hardcores needed a defense to cover a flaw. To them, it seems the idea of Blu-ray was better than the reality of Blu-ray, but to criticize it would mean that their opinion of Blu-ray was also flawed.

For the record, I think this goes on on both sides, but I feel it's important to spotlight the BD side in the hope that one or two people might actually contemplate what I am saying, rather than swiftly (and without any thought or effort) move directly past GO into, "Yeah, HD-DVD fanboys sure are irrational" mode.

And I happen to think blind support for anything is foolish. I own 124 Blu-ray titles, so I've done more to support BD than probably 99% of the people on this forum. I have a responsibility and a right to question and complain about the things I think Blu-ray sucks at. I also happen to think that HD-DVD is a pretty good format as well, and in many ways, superior to Blu-ray. In other ways, Blu-ray is better. I've seen just about every disc on both formats and have gone through a host of different players on both sides. But at least I have an educated opinion, versus one based solely on emotion or pride. I'm sometimes enraged at the behavior of some people who seem to be less interested in being right as much as they are interested in proving someone else's opinion wrong. I also happen to be a little more dialed in to the home entertainment industry than most here and when I speak about certain things, I speak with the comfort of a bit of inside knowledge. I know people and deal with people daily that are creating these discs, the masters, the menus, the authoring, the films... I'm consistently appalled by the shitty smell in these forums these days, but with so many people talking out of their asses, it's no wonder.

Just remember, usually the first one to scream "FANBOY!" is a card carrying member themselves, otherwise they wouldn't be so threatened by the opinions of others and feel the need to drown it out.

The Internet is a vast expanse. No one is forcing you to keep coming here. If you're really that unhappy then by all means: Please do yourself and all of us a huge favor and go somewhere else.

Most people who are labelled "fanboys" are done so by looking at their post history.
