Default Something weird i noticed on tv shows with the collection numbers on this site

For each season every collection number goes down for every show. Is there really some people that buy the first season of a show and do not continue to buy the rest

I own Walking Dead Season 1... after Season 2 dragging on I can't imagine trying to rewatch it.

People could be waiting for price drops or just didn't like the show enough after the first season to continue.

I found season 2 to be better than season 1. I have even found season 3 more entertaining than both, but it's going to be tough waiting until February for a new episode.

I think I have all of any shows I like...At least with the Blu.

I only have maybe 5 seasons of the Simpsons on DVD and only 1 season of South Park.

TV shows on disc can be a real time commitment.

Some shows go down in quality with later seasons. I own several shows (on DVD) I'll never buy the later seasons for.

Or people don't update their collections after the first time.

Lots of shows have season 1 on Blu-ray but season 2 onwards are dvd only. Such a shame.

It's not surprising that there would be higher numbers for the first season as many people will blind buy those, while very few, if any, will blind buy a successive season first. So of those blind buys, there's definitely going to be a certain percentage that didn't like it and thus didn't continue to buy the rest of the seasons.

I own all The Simpsons on DVD and I constantly rewatch random episodes because they're so addicting.

Clearly zombie shows and zombie movies do not suck.

The avatar refers to real life zombies I think we can all agree that would suck

It's not just blind buyers either. In many cases buying one season makes sense for people familiar with a show.

I'm sure I'll eventually have every season of Star Trek: TOS or The Twilight Zone but getting the first season of each largely satisfied that itch.

The same would hold true for a lot of shows. If they were available I could be 99% satisfied with one or two seasons of The Dick Van Dyke show.

You can also factor in however many people stop themselves from ordering season two when they remember that season one is still in the plastic

Season 2 dragged for me as well, but it's worth it if you stick through it. Season 3 is better than both so far.

In fact, that's the rule and not the exception.

I remember reading about this several years ago. Virtually all TV series will sell high numbers for the first season with a steady drop-off in sales for subsequent seasons. It's the way things are.

It might seem odd to you or me...but it's been an accepted reality of video sales since the days of VHS.

depends on the show. I haven't watched all seasons of True Blood but my friend said that the quality has dropped after the first season. in a case like that, the sales might drop. but look at TNG on bluray - the sales will probably get better as each season got better. in some ways, it is better not to be a big hit right out of the box because you set a standard that might be too high to maintain. other problem too is that there is nothing that stands out in each season - the quality of the shows stays constant but there are few episodes that go above and beyond. a show like Cheers would be an example. since most of those shows have little in the way of extras and few big episodes that stand out in people minds, they may not buy the seasons because they just don't see the reason. I was like that with Married with Children - bought the first season and then stopped until recently when i bought the whole series. all depends on the show.

couldn't agree more it is very odd and when i buy a tv show i know i love the show and want to keep buying it. I never blind buy a tv show to me to do that is just beyond stupid.

Absolutely. That's true for live viewing as well. Most series lose audience over the life of the series. Some series do better in the second year than the first year, but after that, the audience tends to drop. When it drops enough, that's when the network says, "okay, we're done". (There is another factor for successful series that doesn't apply to the BD: after the initial contract, the actors will negotiate for more money and there's a point where the show becomes unprofitable. In the last season of Friends, the leads supposedly got $1 million per episode, each.)

People here (and on other sites) have complained because (for example) Warner did not release on DVD every single Warner Brothers cartoon. They did six sets comprising a total of about 360 cartoons and I think there's actually around 1000 cartoons produced. Some fans claimed they wanted a complete collection in chronological order. But that's not the way most people purchase. Sales for each of those DVD sets declined with each new set, because people bought a few and then (except for completists) said, "that's enough." And most consumers wouldn't buy an early chronological set that didn't have the star characters and were in black and white.

Also, if you buy a season of a show and quickly watch in succession 26 episodes, it might make you so sick of the show that you don't want any more seasons.

On the other hand, there will always be completists who want every episode, but those are pretty much a niche market.

It's also somewhat cultural. If you look at the music business the specialty labels in Europe tended to be the ones who would put out the absolute complete works of someone like Muddy Waters or Howlin' Wolf, including alternate takes and outtakes, and put that out as one giant package. You almost never see anything like that in the U.S. Instead you see a box with typically 3-4 CDs. Fans in Europe want complete documentation including master #s, recording dates and personnel and the like. Fans here care much less about that.
