There is a 3 day period for new members joining before they can post in other forums. We have had a lot of people joining to cause trouble due to the format war, thus this was implemented. Just be patient.

Not very friendly...

Well, I was just going to announce that I've gone blu...Way back when I first saw blu-ray and HD-DVD in a Circuit City store the red covers looked so cool, and I didn't have any idea about what I was getting into. The CC employee pushed me towards red last year and said they will probably win. I went red at the time. I liked some of the movies on HD-DVD (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Casablanca, etc) and had been red ever since.

I'm completely fed up with red though. With the lack of customer support, with them losing studio support, and with the subpar image and audio compared to my blu friends. I've sold all my HD-DVD movies and player and am looking for suggestions on how to complete my blu experience.

My budget is ~500 for a player, ~300 for movies. What movies should I start with? What player is the best on the market sub 500 right now? I have a 1080p 50" tv with 2 HDMI outputs.

What pre-amp/digital sound processor do you use?

Edit: If you saw the unfriendly troll posts we've had over the last few months, the need for new member moderation would be quite clear.

Oh! Welcome to Blu!

Cool

Check the thread(s) on the Panasonic DMP-BD30. For $420 everyone seems to be very happy with it.

Well Come!!! We all are your friends here.
After much deliberation, I ended up buying a PS3 40G because it has a lot of potential (it will be a profile 2.0 player soon) and can be the center of entertainment at home.

The reason I asked about your receiver was to determine what your player's audio processing might need to be. If you have a legacy DSP that doesn't process DTS-HD MA or TrueHD, maybe you should hold out until the Panasonic BD-50s ship. I hear they'll be priced a bit above the current BD-30 ($499). If your receiver has the newer codecs, perhaps go with a transport with super-godly video processing that supports bitstream of the higher end audio.

The PS3 is always a solid choice as a player and audio processor if you can deal with the few drawbacks. The price/feature-set combo makes it a hard thing to pass on. I like the fact that gamers subsidize the cost of the blu-ray player.

Welcome. Sorry if it seems unfriendly, but the trolls from HD DVD are far more unfriendly. This has so far worked very well to stop HD DVD trolls from filling our forums.

I am glad to hear you are going Blu! We are of course glad to help you. I suggest personally a PS3 for a BD player. It is the most future-proof player out there, the most capable, and at the best price. (There are some cheaper, but not as capable). As for movies, start with some Disney films, especially Pixar. The Disney films have had wonderful quality, some of the best out there in HD! And I think none can match the perfection of Pixar's films.

As far as a player goes the ps3 is always a solid choice with the blu-ray remote. As far as moives go with a couple different types of movies like cgi ones like Cars or Ratatouille and some action ones like 300 and Casino Royale or even the pirate movies. If you are into the type of movies with a good, but long story Kingdom of Heaven is good and has a great picture

So everyone seems pretty sold on the PS3 huh? Is it still the right choice if you don't really play any games? What else can it do that would still make it worth buying?

I only meant that it didn't seem friendly to keep people here for three days, but I can be patient. I'm full fledged blu.

All I have is a Pirates movie on blu.

What are the best 9 or 10 movies that look and sound absolutely amazing to showcase the new blu player I buy? I need a few that are very family friendly and a few can be more adult oriented.

The PS3 is by far the most upgradeable and future-proof of the players out there. You can also use it to view media files, photos, and you can catalog CDs on it, and then use it as a music playback device. Plus it has a wireless network card built-in.

As far as movies, I would recommend any of the Disney ones, especially Rataouille and Cars. Disney ones are top quality. The Pirates of the Caribbean movies are great quality. Also would recommend Casino Royale, as well as Cast Away, the Prestige, and Enemy of the State.

I implement new member moderation on my forum (www.the-magicbox.com) to avoid spam. Lots of people will register and immediately start a thread with porn links and other such nonsense. No more.

Check out the thread I started here:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=30529

I am absolutely amazed by the capabilities of the PS3. Even if I couldn't use it as the excellent Blu-ray player that it is, it would still be worth every penny of the $399!

If you like sci-fi you should check out Close Encounters of the Third Kind, written and directed by Stephen Spielberg, and Blade Runner directed by Ridley Scott.

Welcome to the forum, the format, and the future of hi-def.

If you like westerns, 3:10 to Yuma looked very good. That and Cars, Ratatouille, Apocolypto, Pirates, Disney...

Thank you all for the warm reception. I didn't know what to expect from blu-ray.com when I'm a former HD-DVD owner. I'd like to think my temporary ownership isn't all my fault - I'm not a super technical person - I just like great movies. Caulk it up to ignorance mixed with temporary insanity.

So I think I will pick up:

40 GB PS3

Cars
Casino Royale
Cast Away
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Happy Feet
Harry Potter 5
Planet Earth
Simpsons Movie

And I think I'll try my hand at Blazing Angels, I like flight simulation games on Windows, so perhaps this might be fun to try.

Welcome to the forum. As someone who uses the PS3 for nothing but a player, I think it is very worth it as just a BD player. I am saving up for the new Panasonic player, but it has more to do with letting my brother buy my PS3 at a price he can afford since he wants both a player and a game system than anything else.

I would recommend the 5th Element remastered, all of the Pirates movies, and Ratatouille as great movies to start with. I will warn you that BD is addictive, thanks to all of the sales and BOGOs, I am now heading for 90 BDs in just shy of a year of collecting.

Don't be surprised at getting a warm welcome. There are plenty of purple people who roam around here just fine. The waiting period is not to keep any who own or have owned HD DVD out, but to keep spammers and that way out there fringe of HD DVD fanatics that would really love to make this forum unreadable. Sad that it is needed, but as others have said, it was a real problem before the policy was instituted.

Enjoy our little piece of Blu heaven and enjoy your player and movies.

Chris
