Default upgrading sound system help please.

Okay, so I am looking at a new reciever (This one) and am also thinking of getting 2 more speakers to get up to 7.1, now i was wondering if i should get 2 small bookshelf speakers that are the same size as my current rear speakers or should i get 2 new tower speakers and move my front speakers to the back. Do the extra 2 speakers need to be big or will small rear ones work just as well, Any suggestions would help thanks.

Depends on how much sound you're looking for, and also whether your current speakers need upgrading. I'd say leaving your towers in the front and using the bookshelf speakers for rears would be fine. But if the towers you already own need upgrading, then perhaps buying a nice new set of towers for the front would be a good idea as you could use the exisiting towers for rears and your bookshelf set for the surrounds. perfect!

p.s. If I'm not mistaken you can do better than 699 on that receiver as well. Not sure if that's actually where you're buying it, or if that was just an example. :-)

you have very tiny 6 and 7s i see. Are tower speakers way batter than bookshelf for the front speakers? Because i could move my front speakers to 4and 5 and get new tower speakers but if it is not a huge difference between tower and book shelf i would just get new small speakers for the back.

I'd tend to agree with swingle007. If your fronts could use upgrades, get those and move the towers to the back. If they don't, bookshelf will be just fine for rears.

Also, I can confirm that the Pioneer 1018 was on sale for $399 on boxing day. Should be able to get someone down at least close to that price

Nice choice of receiver. As it was said the 6th and 7th speaker wont get much play, it will if you use a surround sound matrixing mode, but if you have it on pure direct or auto format decoding, or whatever pioneer decides to call it, then you will only get 5.1 or 6.1 or 7.1 depending on what the movie is encoded with. I use smaller bookshelfs and it is plenty as surround backs are concerned in my 6.1 setup.
