Lumix DMC-G1 Interchangeable Lens Camera - Blu-ray Forum

I ordered one of these and it arrives friday! I got a lot of time with the display one at work, read a ton of positive (and a few negative) reviews online, and I am for sure getting it (though I will have a month to decide if I want to keep it)

But I am curious if anyone owns one or has spent more than an hour or three with one and can speak on the good and bad of it? I've taken and seen some beautiful test shots, so I know it's pretty good under 1600 ISO, but as far as feature and build quality, as well as usability?

Also, it comes with a 14-45 kit lens and I'm getting the 45-200 lens as well... I was wondering if anyone would recommend any specific accessories (short of the obvious lens cloth, bag and SDHC card) to pick up as well?

Lumix line is usually pretty good and from reading your post it sounds like you can get an employee discount on this, which makes it even better!

I am a Canon person myself, but also bought a regular point and shoot by Olympics too keep in the car if needed.

As far as accessories go, get extra batteries and memory cards, you can never have enough of those!

Yeah its a brand new item so the employee discount isn't much... but I found one of our affiliate companies (our Manfrotto supplier actually) had it on for about $100 less than my discount... so I convinced the Camera dept. manager to price match that for me.

I'm getting an 8GB card, probably 2 actually... and the battery I will likely get when I get some time with the camera to test battery life.

I was considering the Rebel XSi or something similar but ultimately after the reviews I read and the time I spent with the cameras, I decided the Lumix was right for me as a starter camera... my first interchangeable lens camera

I don't know much about the Camera your buying. But I always say buy from Canon or Nikon. At least when you decide to upgrade the body, you have lenses to take with you. As once you start buying tons of lenses, you get stuck to a brand...

Good glass holds value, so you are never stuck. Plus, the micro-4/3 system will be interchangable among a few manufacturers just as the current 4/3 system is.

The G1 is a great new camera. I only wish they had taken more advantage of the compact internals and put it in a smaller form. I hope you share some photos!

The G1 is a great new camera. I only wish they had taken more advantage of the compact internals and put it in a smaller form. I hope you share some photos!

What I am referring to, is when you start spending and already have 5-6 lenses to lets say Canon. Well it's time to replace the 30D. But you want the Nikon 300D. Well, it may be a much better camera. But do you want to replace a lot of money worth of lenses, nope you buy the 50D. Because you already invested into Canon Lenses, well for most of it that's how it works. We marry a brand, because we are financially tied. Plus we don't want to take a hit from selling them.

I've personally always wanted a Leica but damn are they pricey. I would be fine with an older D100 though cause I've used them before.

I have a friend who is a professional photographer and he always makes me jealous with his D2X....

He was going to shoot my wedding but damn was he charging a lot and I would have had to fly him out. For the same price he was charging we found a local that did photo and video for us.

There have been a lot of people jumping back and forth lately, especially with the D3/D700 and now 5D MkII. Someone going from one to the other should have no problem selling their glass for close to what they paid. But yes, I understand where you are coming from. In the end the camera is just a tool and it is up to the user what they do with it.

Well if i get serious about photography and decide to buy something a little more full-featured and higher-end, I will be looking at Nikon... but as I said it is kind of a starter camera for me. I will be sinking about $1500 into it total to start (including the kit, the extra lens, a bag, a tripod, and memory cards) so it's not a huge hit if i decide a year from now to sell it and buy something better.

I understand that for the amount I'm spending I could get a Nikon D90 or Canon 50D... but hey, for the money I spent on my Home Theatre stuff I could have put a down payment on a car...

WOOT!! Got it early!!! Here's some test shots I took... I will be taking many, many more to share if anyone is interested.

sorry about the smallish file sizes, the originals were too large and I dont know a site i can host them on.

I use SmugMug.com, but it is a pay site. If you get a referral from me or any other smugmug user you save $5, so it is $35/year. I am very happy with it myself and it has been handy for sharing vacation and baby photos.

Oh... by the way... I'll probably get an external flash right away anyways, but this is really bugging me at the moment... I can not get the built-in flash to fire, even when forced on... any suggestions? (short of exchanging it, which I will do if I don't find a solution)

I am very happy with it. The only size limit is a 10MB per file limit.

If it isn't firing even with fill flash selected in the menu, you may have an issue.
