Hey, all.
Im a long time listener, first time caller. Anyways, so I got myself a Blu ray player on Boxing Day, after waiting months and months for prices to come down, I decided to take the plunge. $169.99. Its a Sharp Acquos Bd-hp21u. Now the problem I'm having is that when I play a Blu ray dvd (I've tried 2 different movies) Audio only comes out through the TV which is a Sharp Acquos Lc-37d62u. My HTIB is a Samsung HT-Tx52. What I hooked up is Hdmi from player to the TV and Optical out from player to the htib. The receiver does not receive a signal at all. But when I hook up my xbox 360 optical out to the htib it goes into 5.1 right away. I like to think of myself as tech savvy and so do majority of my friends, so I took it upon myself to do some research and hope that a professional can shed some light toward this. I'm figuring it's that the dolbytrue-hd is only through hdmi not optical, and that if I'm configuring it for optical out than the player is putting it at 2.0. and I have used the process of elimination, using known-working optical cables and hdmi cable and the htib optical port works like I said previous, and the movies that i'm playing are Batman Begins and Batman dark knight so I know they are 5.1 at least. The player has both hdmi out and component out but can't do both simoultaneously. But if the player is putting out 2.0 through optical than how come no sound is coming from the front speakers, and only the tv? And yes, I have set the settings on the Blu Ray player so audio out through the optical and video through hdmi. Pcm and bitstream no difference. I have also tried a regular dvd (iron man, non bluray) and still only audio through the tv. I have also tried hdmi to tv, and optical out from tv to receiver and still nothing. Just audio through tv only. The only thing left for me to try is switching the cables to component from player to tv and optical out from player to receiver and if nothing happens again I am gonna condemn the optical port on the player. Now this setup isn't exactly top notch as it's for my family room, and I'm in the process of building a theatre room downstairs, and plan on using a ps3 for bluray purposes later on. But, I'm not gonna sit back and say "oh, well". I want a solution regardless. And if I have to sacrifice 1080p for 1080i so be it. Any help and suggestions are much appreciated. |

In the setup menu of the player, there is an audio output option, and find the option that applies to your output from your player to the receiver (which you say you've already tried). Otherwise, it sounds like a setting needs to be fixed on your receiver, because I have the same setup, but I actually have sound through the HDMI with my TV speakers, and through my digital optical output to my receiver, so I need to make sure that my TV volume is turned down to 0 to avoid an echo when watching movies with the player.

O.k. but what equipment are you using? The appropriate settings on the receiver are fine because it automatically detects a signal on that optical in port. Without touching anything on the receiver, if I hook my xbox 360 up, the 5.1 kicks in on the receiver. But as soon as I plug the bluray up on the same port there is nothing.

Double checked the receiver settings and yes it is set. All I have to do is change the Function to digital in. Still nothing through the speakers, just the tv.

I think what I have to do is, indefinately, remove the hdmi setup and go with component for video and optical for audio, and then, I will know for sure if the optical port is working. Because component doesn't carry audio.
I'll do that when I get off work tonight and post back. |

Yes, that may tell you if the problem is your HDMI connection, but component will be 1080i, as HDMI is the only way for full 1080p, and with BluRay that's what you're paying for.
Another setting (which you already mentioned checking) in the player setup is the HDMI audio output. I seem to remember that when I was first setting everything up, occasionally a setting would revert, like HDMI, because it is digital, it would automatically pick up the sound and picture, and I would have to go back, AFTER the HDMI was plugged in and the player turned on and my TV waited and received the signal, THEN hit stop on the remote, and THEN go into the setup and make sure everything is correct. |

Just to let you know this is where you get a firmware update.
So if your having trouble with some movies it's more then likely firmware. Just giving you a heads up ![]() Save this to your favorites http://www.sharpusa.com/products/Typ...86,229,00.html Good luck OZZMAN |

Yup, I know when sometimes you go unplug something and then plug it back in it reverts, but I also triple checked that. I also turned the unit off, just in case it needs to reset or something stupid.
Also, checked for firmware update, and the unit came with the latest firmware. Thanks, for your suggestions, but I think I'm running out of options. Damn, I still have to switch the cable to component, definately today, after work. Yeah, I'll have to settle for 1080i instead of 1080p but thats life I guess. |

O.k. So I disconnected the hdmi cable, hooked up the component cable, and went back into the settings and made the necessary adjustments.
Popped in Batman Begins, and........still no sound out of the optical port. hmmmmm.......went back into the settings and changed it from bitsteam to pcm, and.......still no audio from the optical port. Back to Future Shop I go for exchange, or refund. I'll find out when I get there. Thanks to those who replied with suggestions and ideas. |

Hi just thought I'd add my experience to this issue.
I have a Sharp BD-HP20u player (so pretty similar to yours) connected to a Sharp LCD TV (via an HDMI cable). I also have an optical cable from the TV to my Yamaha amp (to output the sound from my in-built tv tuner to the amp) and an optical cable from the Blu-ray player to the amp. If I use the HDMI cable (I only really want it for the picture) I don't get any sound from the optical cable between the blu-ray player and the amp. The only way I can get sound is via the optical cable between the TV and amp. (I assume the sound is coming from the bluray player, via the HDMI cable to the TV) This means that I need to have the TV on to listen to a CD, which isn't ideal. I've also played around with all of the audio output settings from the bluray (there are audio settings for HDMI optical out etc) but can't get it to work as you'd hope. Sorry I haven't given you a solution, but I guess I'm confirming that there seems to be an issue. Any possible solutions appreciated. Dan |
