Default Horror movies as of late...

At the beginning of the year, we had 3 remakes in 3 months... January was One Missed Call, which wasn't as terrible as most reviewers said IMO, but still wasn't exactly a classic. Plus they changed the ending from the original, and it sucked.

February was The Eye, which was actually surprisingly good. It's one of the very few remakes I think actually live up to the original.

March gave us Shutter... oh god, it's painful for me to remember. I still can't decide whether it's worse than Uwe Boll's Alone in the Dark... it's THAT terrible.

I saw all three of them in theaters, and I was impressed with The Eye, laughed at some of the dumb changes they made to One Missed Call, and kept waiting for something, ANYTHING interesting to happen in Shutter (it never did).

Now I own One Missed Call and The Eye on Blu-ray... but I still lament the horror scene today. Next month, two new horror flicks with strangely similar titles come out... The Uninvited, which is not a remake of the film with that title but is instead a remake of the Korean film A Tale of Two Sisters, and The Unborn, which isn't technically a remake of anything, but might as well be because it's so derivative.

So I was wondering... anyone else have any thoughts on the subject?

i cant stand the recent onslaught of crappy american horror movies. i've been watching more and more foreign horror movies because they are crafted with so much more intelligence. instead of just trying to make you jump out of your seat with stupid cliche sequences, they inject a chilling, creepy mood into you that stays with you throughout the film and long after. current favorite is the orphanage.

The thing that upsets me the most is that the original One Missed Call and Shutter were really good...

The only remake I've seen that I'd call BETTER than the original is Dark Water. Incredibly moody and atmospheric, with a top-notch cast and great directing. VERY psychological.

Well I hate to say it but I have to agree with all the fools who think its a good idea just because there is a market for it

I wish they would just release the originals, but then again most americans cant handle subtitles...they dont want to go to the movies to "read"

There are plenty of great foreign horror films I could recommend... as I said, the original One Missed Call and Shutter were very good. Also, A Tale of Two Sisters, while not pure horror, was great. Marebito is also really good, it's from the director of The Grudge but it's a totally different style. Also great, but very depressing, are Suicide Club and the original Pulse. And, of course, Ringu is good too.

There are also plenty that are just mediocre... Phone and Nightmare are both from the same South Korean director, but are pretty blah. The second and third Japanese One Missed Call movies are also pretty average. Plus there's the Korean version of Ringu, called The Ring Virus, which is very average. Red Shoes starts out well enough, but falters a lot in the end... the original Dark Water is more of a generic ghost flick than the awesome remake, but is serviceable enough.

As for one to avoid, I'd say stay away from The Wig. It's just silly and dumb.

All of these films are available on Region 1 DVD, except for the third One Missed Call, which I had to import. None of them, as of yet, are on Blu.

They're going to remake all of our favorite classic horror movies and then in 20-30 years, they are going to remake the remakes. The cows are still dripping.

I really liked some of the recent remakes of classic horror flicks (Dawn Of The Dead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre were surprisingly good--- others not so good--The Fog for instance)

as a lifelong horror fan the things I love are atmosphere, direction, scary
images, etc. These are all staples of horror flicks from the 30's to the
70's. Then these things were replaced with gore and more gore--so much so
that now 80's horror flicks like Friday the 13th look totally tame....and I love
tons of 80's horror flicks as well. too many films today are clueless flicks
that revel in bodies being ripped apart and throats being slit-- WITHOUT any
style or direction (which makes all the difference BTW-- as my remake picks
above prove since they are obviously gory)

With blu-ray, the releases I'm most excited about are these older horror
flicks-- literally hundreds of them-- when will Warner release some British
Hammer flicks? Why isn't Universal giving us their classic monster flicks?
hopefully in the next year we are treated to some of these classics....

The magic of the 80's horror films will probably never again be recaptured.

I haven't gone to see a Horror Film in a long time just because i always find them unsatisfing. Either the blood scenes are good or they bring out the "villian" too early, it's always something that bothers me. But i have scene the new trailer for Friday the 13th and that actually looks promising. The main thing i saw in the trailer was that they took out that drone, zombie style of walking Jason had in the originals which for some reason just put a smile on my face when i saw it.

Have you seen Midnight Meat Train? Or The Devil's Chair? I liked both of them, especially The Devil's Chair.

Not the first ones, those were pure horror movies as they are supposed to be. After that Horror/funny came into fashion and they ****ed up a whole bunch of good franchises IMO.
