Default What happened to LCOS tvs?

I bought a sony SXRD 55" 2 years ago. been working fine.

I was curious if anyone had any idea as to why the technology was abandoned by TV manufactures

they put the R&D money into OLED tv's & also the green blob issues...

So you know Sony has extending their warranty on the optical block to 2010....

you can read it on my (givemeaname is me over there) thread here:

They also decided it was more profitable to produce LCD flat panels.

My step dad managed to get a great deal on a 60" sxrd recently.

I hope sxrd front projection doesn't get abandoned because I think it's miles ahead of any LCD, DLP crap.

I use a CRT FP that's still in mint condition (I recently had the lenses off to check the tubes) but if ever CRT is hard to get ... I hope sxrd FP is still around.

There are a couple of major issues Sony and others couldn't shake with these sets. The first is the imperfect optical engine found in them. Sony was forced to a decent sized settlement due to the rampant failure rates that caused purple blobs and uniformity issues from the XBR2 into the A3000. The second is the limited bulb life, many consumers who bought these sets didn't realize you have to change the bulb every 3-5k hours at $300 a bulb this started to turn people onto the 60k life of LCDs.

They are cheap sets and you get a lot of screen for the price but it is a very imperfect troublesome technology.

I had an A2020 was a couple of years....have you had to get your optical block changed yet? I had mine replaced 3 times in that period. It was a real pain.

I do have a 2" green blob on my tv on the left bottem side but I am waiting for the weather too clear & melt the snow, IE spring time to come to get it fix. I bought the EW so I am covered until 2012.
I have read the horror stories over on AVS about it taking 3-4 times too fix them I mostliky will be getting a plasma next year anyway & then the SXRD will be put in a more brightly lite room so any future green blobs I mostliky will not see, the green blob is very faint on my tv.

I thought the A3000 were not as prone to this issues. Is it the same optical block as used in the 2000 series?

Have had mine for almost a year now and no problems. I have about 2000+ hours on the bulb, but got an extended warranty with mackcam and it includes one free bulb.

The A3000 uses a re-designed optical block. Even the service menu is entirely different from previous models and it does have a better contrast ratio and more accurate color primaries than previous models.

As far as optical block issues on the A3000, they really haven't been around long enough to know for sure yet. So far, there have been very limited reports of block issues on other forums. However, more time is needed to see what happens. I've had no issues at all with mine, but I admit I'm a little concerned based on previous models. As far as lamp life, I know of one guy who just had his lamp die and it was close to 6,000 hours.

My A3000 is ISF calibrated and very impressive in terms of PQ. I've had it over a year and I estimate around 2,000 hours or so. The image has a very natural, smooth, extremely detailed, noise-free image -- very film-like. I used to have a well calibrated Sony CRT RPTV before this TV and I definitely prefer the A3000.
