Default Movie prices rant

Hi, just a general rant. I just got back from Wal Mart. Generally, I don't buy movies at the local stores because I can find them for less on line, but occasionally I peruse the movie section anyways hoping to find a deal. Both Bangkok Dangerous and Saw V are cheaper (by about $1) at my local Wal Mart than they are on Walmart.com or Amazon.com. I also noticed that most of the newer releases on SDDVD were $19.96 on full-screen and $24.96 on Wide Screen. For an SDDVD! Most of the newer Blurays were $24.96 or $29.96. Doesn't seem so bad when compared to $24.96 for the SD widescreen version. Used to be they would have new releases on SD for $14.96 or $16.96. When did the price go up? Have you noticed this at your local WalMart too? They also had the Eden Lake DVD for $14.96, which is about $3 less than Walmart.com or Amazon.com. However, Vacancy 2: The First Cut was $19.96. Anyway, I picked up Saw V, and am on the fence about going back and picking up Eden Lake on SD, because it got cancelled on Bluray, and who knows if they will release it or not. I haven't bought an SDDVD for over a year.

My WalMart used to have the new DVD releases for about $10 off on release week from Tuesday to about Sunday. Back when I used to buy DVDs thats where I would go to get em. I was hoping they would continue doing this when they expanded their Blu-ray selection but it did not happen that way. Instead they somehow got rid off the $10 off deal altogether. Im not sure exactly when it happened...but it did *insert eerie music* lol and it saddens me. Now I just buy most of my movies online unless I want them on release day like yesterday and Saw V.

Yea, thats what's holding me from actually buying blu-rays! I will not pay 39.95 for a movie unless is from my top 5, from which I already have like 3 titles.

I would like to see Pearl Harbor and others, but when I see them for 39.95 in Target Im like... blu-ray it's not THAT good...

Ah yes, the good old days, before the evil temptress of HD came into our lives. Funny, I used to do the same thing. It was nice to be able to pick up 2-3 movies on release day. Now $25.00 is my threshold of pain on a new release.

Here in Canada prices range from decent (Saw V was 24.99 at Futureshop) to complete ridiculous (32.99 is are standard New Release price). I went to Best Buy and they want 40.99 for Step Brothers, I was shocked . These days I only buy catalogue titles (which are still too high, I payed 24.99 for King Kong yesturday) unless it is a must own title for me.

For new US releases my threshold is 25.00. Catalog titles in IMO shouldn't be anymore than 15-20$ US. Unless its a movie I really love, I'll wait for a sale.

I buy most of my catalog Blu-rays through Amazon and their 3rd party sellers. Best Buy or Fry's for new releases as long as they aren't 29.99.

Prices are still too high.. Who's gonna pay 35.00 for Employee of the Month or Delta Farce? lol

the price on bd have gone up the last months and since I did import alot but the reason for import is no longer there since the price in north america is too high.

In march-april 2008 I could get a bd for 22-24 usd but now the price is around 37-39 USD and that is higher then I can get them for here in europe.

So now I only buy a few not so many as I did.

ummm, yea -- nobody is paying $39.95. SD or BD, lol. Places like Target, they have no clue obv. for the real BD buyers like the people here (audiophiles/movie buffs). The only places we really have are obv. Amazon, FYE, Fry's, and in many cases, some Walmarts, Best Buys, & Circuit City. Looks like in many cases prices are going down. Slowly, but they are. Just like everything that's new; months go by, and the prices go down. Hopefully the economy will spur on the sellers' lowering prices comparable to SD price lines or close.

*** Obviously, I can only talk about U.S. prices, as I see many people here are from Europe/Canda, etc. ***

The Wal-Marts in my area have the highest prices for Blu Rays around. The only ones I've bought from them have been the few 10 dollar titles like First Blood, Stargate, and T2. The rest I get from Amazon sellers.

I pay no more than 15.99 plus tax for any Blu unless it's a must buy.

Yeah not too sure what happend to Walmart but they do suck! If you can find what your looking for there at all they are way over priced. I used to go every Tuesday almost and get a good deal on DVD but have not gotten anything at Walmart in probably over a year. Now I just go straight to Amazon. Most of their new release titles on Blu are at least a few bucks cheaper than Walmart. I got The Dark Knight for around $24 on Amazon and it would have been over $30 at Walmart!

i think the big box retailers, best buy, walmart, used to be circuit city, all have prices that are wayyyyyy too high for the simple reason that a lot of people dont know how many bargains there are on BD if they simply look online, i think if more people were aware of this, and more would buy thier blus online, it would force prices down across the board, even at the online retailers so they can stay a little ahead of the brick and mortar retailers, because the only thing the brick and mortar guys have on the online guys is the fact you get to take it home with you that day, everybody wins!!!

Prices went up because they no longer have an competition from HD-DVD. I'm sure oil prices and the economy has something to do with it as well, but that's the major reason I see.

you could be right but think also every one that is selling wants a bigger pice of the action!, means higher prices.

But hope they understand that 37-39 is too high.

It almost got to the point where when I go to the store, I don't look for titles, I look for prices and when I see a good price, then I'll see if the movie is worth getting. and most the time.... its no.
