I'm using total media theater. I can open up a blue ray stored on the hard drvie fine, if I open totalmedia theatre from the start menue, then just select "source".
But if I select totalmedia from wmc, there is no option to open the file from the hard drive... am I missing something? |

Sorry-- should have included my specs.
Just got my home theater up and running on blue rays... its a pentium M machine, 4 gigs ram, 2tb drives, running windows vista ultimate, and an ATI 3850 video.... Using total media for playback. blue ray plyback from the disk is flawless, and opening up a blue ray stored on the hard drive is also flawless, but only when I use total media from the start menu-- when I run total media from WMC, there is no option to open a blue ray from the disk drive--- any thoughts? |

Perhaps someone has(gasp) ripped a BD to the HDD and is wanting to play it back. Even though it is deemed a no-no here, there is actually nothing wrong about it. Section 1201 of the DMCA. To the OP: Playing *AS* a BD in Media Center or in Media Center through ArcSoft... probably isn't going to happen. Sorry. |

Any by the way, I'm not trying to pirate blue rays. And I'm certainly not asking anyone how to copy blue rays. I'm simply asking about an existing functionality of a commercial piece of software--- specifically, total media, when it is integrated into WMC. Much like you can open a DVD stored on your hard drive in WMC, if there is any nice, easy way to open a blue ray already stored on a hard drive in WMC, other than exiting WMC and opening a separate program, such as total media.
For some reason, total media CAN open a blue ray that you have stored on your hard drive when you open the program outside of WMC... but if you open total media IN wmc, there is no option to open content from the hard drive. And one more point-- simply because I'm asking about opening a blue ray from a hard drive, does not mean I'm trying to pirate, or that I've copied any type of warez, or that I've downloaded something illegal. Just like with DVDs, there, are uncountable numbers of legit, legal reasons to be storing blue-ray content on a hard drive. Last edited by jmg; 01-24-2009 at 08:30 PM. |

you say blu, I'll mispell it and call it blue.
I'm not a pirate, and there's nothing wrong with the question I've asked. Maybe take a minute and look at the other posts I have in here, and it would be quite aparent that you are incorrect. |

guys, unless you are applying some bizzaro-world definition of pirating, I always though that it was vernacular for illegaly copying and/or distributing content that was protected by copyright law.
I'm not asking anything remotely related to that.. I'm simply asking whether Total Media's ability to open blue ray content from a disk can be used in WMC or not. *ShEESH* |

Yeah, ... well, that's how you're supposed to watch them. They are designed to be played back from the disc. Like I said.. if the data is on the hard drive you've already got something wrong. =Brian |

I'm going to let this thread die... it's not worth killing my reputation over.
But for the record, there is a *very* good (AND LEGAL, brian ) reason for storing your blue rays on hard drives-- I have two kids, and I have three shelves of DVDs/blue rays in our playroom that are completly overloaded with opened cases, spilled contents, mismatched disks. I very much believe in preserving people's intellectual property rights, and I purchased each and every DVDE and blue ray I own-- but when you have two kids running around with sticky jelly fingers, running amuck in the dvd piles.. you can very quickly and easily see how putting DVDs and blue rays on a home theater is the better solution. But like I said, you guys can stop calling me a pirate. You're being a bit paranoid, as nothing I asked even remotly smacked of violating anyone's IP rights. But while I am not a pirate, I am going to let this thread die. |

May I possibly answer your question, Petra?
Because not having to carry the disc is a plus. Owning laptops myself, playback while on battery from the HDD uses less power than with the BD drive running and therefore overall runtime is increased. Wear and tear on the Optical drive is lowered dramatically - eliminated for the playback of said movie(s) on the HDD. While the discs themselves are more durable, accidents do happen. |

Thats actually a very good point, and I never thought of that.
I routinely load up my laptop with DVDs before I fly--- Not becuase I want to "PIRATE" anything, but becuase I have a SDD drive, which, if I use instead of the DVD, will last almost 4 hours... using the DVD drive (or the blue ray drive) drops my battery life down to under two hours. |
