As a Canadian who has been to the US a number of times the Americans I have met always said they would have never guessed I was Canadian... The whole "Aboot" things is BS and the closest to that pronunciation would be the folks on the East Coast. I am sure I do have some kinda accent when saying certain words but its not noticable to me.
edit: I do say Eh a lot though. Last edited by master_8ball; 04-12-2012 at 03:28 PM. |

If I speak French, well for most other French speaking people in the world, I do have one and a rather strange one, or so they say. If I speak English, yes I have this French accent that come's out but is usually popular with the ladies

I'm from mainland NS, and when I was in London, Ontario, people assumed I was from Ontario, as I don't have the "East Coast accent." Some people on the East Coast have accents, others don't. Accents even vary from different parts of the same East Coast province. My mother's family grew up on the South Shore of Nova Scotia, and there's traces of German in their accents, since it was an area heavily settled by Germans. Dad's family grew up on the North Shore about an hour away from Cape Breton, which has more of the celtic tinge to it, since that area was settled predominantly by the Scots, English, and Irish. It's not as strong as say some who come from Cape Breton, but it's there. |

I'm not 100% trilingual any more, as I rarely get to speak Dutch and French, but I am certainly more than proficient at it. I just lucked out living where I have....had no choice. Either learn the langauge or get the crap beat out of you...LOL!

No typical northeastern accent here; my parents moved around too much, I think (Mass, Colorado, Maine, Germany), for me to develop one.
Of course, living here in Mass I get to hear a heck of a lot of "R"-less speaking (see kpkelley's example, lol)! |
