Default 7.1 worth it?

I placed a order for a SVS SCS-01 SBS rears 5.0 and wanted to know if I should upgrade to a 7.1? My room is tiny 10x12x^9 with the sofa being pushed back to the wall. My installer told me that 7.1 would open up my sweet spot a bit more and that 7.1 is the furture? Any help would be great.

Just to play devil's advocate, very little 7.1 content exists. One could easily make the argument that it is not worth the $$ to have the extra two channels.

But I have a 7.1 system and I'm hopeful that more content is coming with seven discreet channels.

agreed - I have 7.1 and very rarely are the 6th and 7th channels used

Hell, most movies don't even take full advantage of 5.1

I'd say wire for them and save the money for a while - and if you find a great deal on the extra speakers, do it

I had 7.1 and went to 5.1 with the front's bi-amp'd. If your AVR can matrix 5.1 to 7.1 by all means go 7.1.

I'm getting a new 7.1 receiver, but everything i own is 5.1. I'm thinking of putting up enough speakers for 6.1, so my question is.... is it better to matrix 7.1 form a 6.1 setup, a 5.1 setup, or is it a draw?

Make sure it can matrix 5.1 to 7.1, otherwise all of your 5.1 titles will come through the center channel and not the rear. I have the Onkyo 605 and it cant matrix, so I went back to 5.1

There have been some conversations over at AVS that supposedly this feature has been added to the 606. However, I'm not sure it has been added for HD audio codecs. It would be worth your while to find out for sure. Easiest way is:

1. Make sure you have the newest firmware for your receiver.
2. During playback of HD audio, see if you can change the surround mode to PL IIx or if it just goes from "Direct" to "Audyssey".

It does sound better than a 5.1 system, but it's not totally worth it just yet.

Since I'm upgrading my fronts and using those ones as my new rears, I'll be able to use my old rears as side speakers... but that's the only reason I'm doing it. I don't have to buy any new speakers at all, it's just a bit of wiring for me.

I'd say wire your room for it, but don't buy the speakers just yet. Unless you do have some decent speakers lying around...

Default Video Games

Lots of video games on PS3 support 7.1 so if youre a big gamer, I recommend a 7.1 system...

a good receiver with 7.1 can make a big difference too. I run 7.1 with everything and it sounds wonderful.

Well I just bought the new denon 2309ci So I think it does turn 5.1 into 7.1. Plus I have been known to second guess and upgrade pretty much everything I buy so for a few more bucks I should just do it now. Here is some pic of my room where would I put the rear 4 speakers?

No such thing..... a 5.1 encode can only be played as 5.1 through 8 speakers (7.1) but that doesn't make it 7.1

It's simply splitting the signal from the surrounds (2 speakers) into the surrounds and rears (4 speakers) but it's sending 6 discrete audio signals, NOT 8, such as 7.1

Just like currently there is only a .1 but not .2 such as 7.2

To get a true 7.2 takes more than adding a second sub, it would require audio tracks being written so two subs are each receiving a separate signal, not just two subs in two different places playing the same low frequency at the same time...... There currently aren't any Blu-rays or other home media for that matter, that offers a 7.2 audio track.

as for your question, it's not 4 rear speakers you want.... you want two rears, and two side surrounds, but you're going to want to move your couch because your rears should be BEHIND you! and preferrably not used as a head-rest

7.1 is awesome. the first time you hear an uncompressed 7.1 track it will surprise you with how great it is. bullets voices explosions all of it sounds great when its coming from all around you.
