Olive Films will be releasing a Blu-ray with Frank Capra's WWII documentaries on November 6thh. I believe these are different from his Why We Fight series.

I will definitely have to get this one down the road. Though a few of these are part of the Why We Fight series like The Battle of Russia and Prelude to War.

Yeah, there are two here which are also on the "Why We Fight" disc, and two of Capra's WWII short docs that are not on Blu at all -- "Two Down and One to Go" doesn't seem to have any release, while "Why We Fight: Japan" has been on some PD DVDs. Too bad they couldn't swap out the dupes for those.

I just watched the first film Prelude to War and it's excellent. Maybe it's because I watched films on TV for years, then VHS, DVD and now Blu Ray, I don't expect these films to look like they were just released yesterday. I read about scratches, missing frames, and poor sound quality, (not just on this release, but many), and I just wonder what kind of TV did these reviewers have before cable? Perhaps they were born after cable was the norm, and only watched on a small screen, so the scratches didn't show on the screen. I've seen first run films in the theatre with dust and scratches. It's part of the world. It's film.
There's something Joseph McBride said a few times and the reviewer on blu-ray.com mentions "it's probably misleading to think of Capra as what film fans traditionally think of as a "director" with any of these films." McBride finishes with he's really the Executive Producer. I've never heard anything so stupid regarding filmmaking. Frank Capra directed these documentaries. Shots weren't just haphazardly thrown together. The narrator didn't wing it. The music wasn't placed where the music director wanted. ALL of these things were directed by Capra. From the get go, it has that Capra feel. That's not by accident. That's by Capra's direction. A Director doesn't just get the shots. As a matter of fact many directors allow the Director of Photography to plan the shots, they just discuss it with the Director. The director is in charge of EVERYTHING. It's his product. I guess according to McBride Capra's a great executive producer as well. After watching McBride's intro and then the stupidity of his "not really a director" claim, I can't imagine his book is of any value at all. I don't know how factual the first film is. But, looking up online a few points, it seems on target. Prelude to War is fascinating to watch, and bizarrely entertaining. It gives details we don't hear about anymore. I'm looking forward to watching one a night. |
