Default Who do you want to direct Star Wars EpisodeIX?

With recent announcement that Trevorrow is no longer director, the studio needs to secure a new one ASAP if it wants to keep the current release date.

I've only included a few suggestions, but I know you guys have other ones in mind.

  • Abrams: one's enough from this dude. All his movies play pretty fast and loose--which is pretty hip and fun for re-calibrating the direction of the franchise, but I'd rather see somebody else handle the trilogy finale.
  • Johnson: yeah, I have faith in The Last Jedi. Doesn't mean I'd want to see the same qualities repeated.
  • Lucas: no.
  • Spielberg: interesting choice, but he has his own share of trademarks and excesses that I don't think will marry as well with Star Wars. I could see him doing a good spin-off, but not a numbered episode.
  • Kasdan: the man's a great writer, but I'm personally not as impressed with his directorial efforts.
So who would I like to see? Somebody in the other thread mentioned Brad Bird and Andrew Stanton--both would be perfect choices imo. Matthew Vaughn would be awesome. Maybe Joss Wheadon, if possible. Maybe Gore Verbinski.

I would not want to see Ron Howard brought in--I think most of his work is bland. Dennis Villeneuve and David Fincher, both great directors, would be too stiff for this (but I would welcome them for spin-offs). Edgar Wright and James Gunn would be fun choices, but once again, I'd welcome them for spin-offs rather than the numbered episodes.

Rian Johnson. Loved Looper and his work on Breaking Bad.

Joe Johnston

Although it would be nice to finally see Spielberg get to do a Star Wars.

Alfonso Cuarón would probably be the best director they could get, he made one of the best Harry Potters and also did an amazing job with Gravity. He's hands down the best director at pioneering cutting-edge technology - but all in support of a strong story w/ well-rounded characters.

Bit late now, seeing as Abrams has already been announced, but I was personally very happy to have seen either Abrams or Johnson take over this. In fact, I hope Johnson collaborates on the script, or even has an equal hand in production like Lucas did in Return of the Jedi. I was dreading this particular sequel when I heard Trevorrow was on board - Safety Not Guaranteed was instantly forgettable stuff, and as a big fan of Spielberg's Jurassic Park (and even more the original Crichton novel), Jurassic World was largely pathetic.

If they were going to grab a brand new director though, I would've hoped for one of the following: Duncan Jones, Guillermo del Toro, David Gordon Green, Alfonso Cuarón, Brad Bird. Some of those names might've been busy though - either promotion of a recently-completed project (Mute, The Shape of Water) or pre-production/production of their next project (The Incredibles 2, Roma, Halloween). Perhaps it was sensible to grab a director such as Abrams who didn't have a directorial project lined up, and whom in my opinion definitely delivered on the promise of The Force Awakens.
